Israel Makes Strides in Eye Disease Research

This procedure is particularly
vital in Israel, where the disease
of trachoma is still prevalent and
a frequent cause of total blind-
ness.
Many electronic devices, includ-
ing a microscope measuring 250,-
000 times greater than any other
device and an electronic physio-
logical computer, have been ac-
quired recently.
The head of the ophthal-
mology department, Prof. I. C.
Michaelson, recently received a
grant for clinical research in
trachoma and for the continued
use of the mobile ophthalmic
unit. This unit tours areas where
there are needy persons who are
unable to come to the medical
center.
The ophthalmology department
is contained in an entire floor of
the Hebrew University-Hadassah
Medical Center and was established
with the generosity of Sir Isaac
Wolfson. It is said that Sir Isaac
met with Prof. Michaelson on a
visit to Israel and found they had

Work of the department is sup-
ported through the drive.
Dr. Max L. Lichter, husband of
the Detroit Chapter president, re-
ported that on his recent trip to
Israel *Mrs. Lichter was attending
the World Zionist Congress) he
observed work being done in the
internationally recognized ophthal-
mology department.
The most dramatic breakthrough
in eye surgery in recent years, he
said, has been the introduction of
the technique of replacing hope-
lessly diseased organs of a living
person with healthy organs of
donors. It was Hadassah doctors
who discovered why corneal eye
grafts had not always been suc-
