HOLLYWOOD—Ephraim Kishon,
author-director of "Sallah," and
Haim Topol, the motion picture's
28-year-old star, flew in from
Israel to accept two Golden Globes
from the Hollywood Foreign Press
Association at the annual awards
banquet in Los Angeles. The He-
brew-language screen comedy re-
ceived the distinction of being
selected as "Outstanding" foreign
film; Mr. Topol was named "Most
Promising Newcomer" or star of
tomorrow.
In his acceptance speech that was
carried by the combined NBC net-
work throughout the U. S. and
Canada. Mr. Kishon stressed the
fact that Israel is still an infant
in film making and has produced
hardly more than a dozen top fea-
tures in her 17 years of statehood.
The announcement that "Sallah"
was to be honored with a Golden
Globe received a tremendous round
of acclaim from the usually rather
blase audience assembled in the
Cocoanut Grove of the Hotel Am-
bassador.
Kishon, a sad-faced humorist,
who came to Israel only in 1949
from his native Hungary where he
experienced the horrors of Nazi
oppression throughout many years

Globes at the Hollywood Foreign
Press fete were also George Cukor

Warner who picked up the statu-
ette as producer of the same pic-
ture; Hal Wallis was honored as
producer of "Becket"—the best

his bow as movie producer with
MGM's "Baker Street," based on
the Broadway play adapted by Jer-
ome Coopersmith from A. Conan
Doyle stories about Sherlock
Holmes that had a million dollars
advance sale. Cohen produced the
legit version with Metro invest-
ing a cool $250,000 in the stage
venture starring Fritz Weaver,
Martin Gabel and Inga Swenson.
Sherlock Holmes is also the
subject of a serious film Billy

famed detective from Baker Street
and Peter Sellers as his companion

Alexander Ramati, a former
Israeli journalist and now resident
of Hollywood, has completed a pic-
ture in the Holy Land based on his
own novel "Rebels Against The
Light." The all-star cast is head-
ed by Diane Baker, David Opato-
shu and Tom Bell (the latter a
young British actor who scored
with Leslie Caron in "The L-
