Mercy College - ADL Dialogue Will Explore
`Tensions, Responsibilities in New Climate'
Mercy College of Detroit and
the Anti-Defamation League of
Bnai Brith will hold the second
annual Jewish-Catholic Dialogue
Thursday under the title "Ten-
sions and Responsibilities in a
New Climate."
The day-long program will start
at 9 a.m. with registration in Mc-
Auley Auditorium on the Mercy
campus.
Keynote addresses will be given
at 11:30 a.m. by the Most Rev.
G. Emmett Carter, bishop of Lon-
don, Ont., and by Rabbi Leon
Feuer, president of the Central
Conference of American Rabbis.
Ten discussion groups will as-
semble at Our Lady of Mercy
High School at 1 p.m. to explore
tensions and responsibilities in
the home, in social relationships,
the neighborhood, in church and
state relationships, and in educa-
tion.
Chairmen and consultants for
the afternoon sessions include
Francis J. Coomes, director of
the Michigan Catholic Confer-
ence; Dr. Leonard Moss, chair-
m a n, sociology department,
Wayne State University; Samuel
Lerner, director of Jewish Fami-
ly and Children's Service; Bert
Levy, Michigan Civil Rights
Commission; Herman Jacobs,
University of Mirbigan; and
Sister Mary Leila, administra-
tor of Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospi-
tal.

Rites Planned for July
A summary panel will meet at
4:30 p.m. to summarize the find-
ings of the discussion groups.
It will be chaired by Richard Lo-
benthal, Michigan director of
ADL.
The evening session, which be-
gins at 8, is open to the public
with no admission charge. Speak-
ers will be Mother Mary Luke,
&L., who was named by Pope
Paul VI as the first American
woman auditor at Vatican Council
II, and Dr. Joseph L. Lichten, di-
rector of ADL's department of in-
tercultural affairs, who has at-
tended the Vatican Council's ses-
sions promoting mutual under-
standing between Christians and
Jews.

president of Mercy College of De-
troit, and Mrs—Charles Solovich,
chairman of the regional advisory
board of ADL, are co chairmen
for the Dialogue Day. Mrs. Beulah
Whitby, chairman of the depart-
ment of social work and sociology
at Mercy, is coordinator, and Lo-
benthal, secretary.

S. Lawrence and Rella Halpern, son and daughter of Rabbi and
Mrs. Israel I. Halpern, of Santa Rosa Ave. spent a week here while on .
vacation from school in New York City. Lawrence, who graduated from
Harvard Law School last summer and who passed the Michigan Bar in
December, was sworn in as a member of the Bar in a private ceremony
in the courtrooms of Federal Judge Wade McCree Jr., and Circuit Court
Judge Nathan J. Kaufman. He is continuing his law studies in the gradu-
ate department of New York University, majoring in labor relations.

The 40th anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Jack M. Karbal will be cele-
brated at Sabbath services Saturday morning at Cong. Aravas Achim.
To honor the couple, their children, Mr. and Mrs. Morton Mehler, Mr.
and Mrs. Monte Korn and Mr. and Mrs. Leonard blitz and 13 grand-
children have donated 18 volumes of the Tanach to the synagogue
library.
The Sherman Family Club will meet 8:30 p.m Sunday at the home
of Dr. and Mrs. Philip Sherman, 18114 Warrington. At the last meeting
the following officers were installed: Louis Wolfgang, president; Sam
Center, vice president; Mrs. Aubrey Gordon, secretary; Jean Lorber,
treasurer; and Johanna Meyers, corresponding secretary.
Mrs. Eleanor Atkinson of Glynn Travel, Grand River, and Mr.
Harold Kalt of Kalt Travel, Birmingham, were guests of El Al Airlines
and of the Dan Hotels for a week's stay in Israel.
