Full Story of Lord Haw-Haw Reveals William Joyce's Vile Anti-Semitism Before William Joyce assumed the title "Lord Haw-Haw," there was a predecessor who called him- self that as he broadcast pro-Hit- ler talks. But the title stuck to Joyce and the story of his activi- ties, of his anti-British and anti- democratic radio talks, his activi- ties in behalf of Hitler, are des- cribed in great detail in "Lord Haw-Haw and William Joyce," by J. A. .Cole, a contemporary of the traitor. The revealing book has just been issued by Farrar, Straus and Co. Joyce's career, which ended on the gallows, forms one of the most dramatic stories of the last war. A native of New York, he had claimed English citizenship. Cole's book tells the story of his much- discussed passport which was a major issue in Joyce's defense dur- ing his appeal in the House of Lords, in the controversies that preceded his being sentenced to die for treason. He had become popular because his broadcasts, traitorous as they were, contained information that intrigued his list- eners. There is no doubt about Joyce's anti-Semitism. The Cole story reveals it, and there is an especially pertinent reference to his hatred of Jews. The author of the Lord Haw-Haw story states that "he was putting an increasing barrier between him- self and other politicians by his developing anti-Semitism. It may help to make his later utterances intelligible if I remind the read- er that anti-Semites are not simply people who dislike Jews for their faces, trading practices, ritual slaughtering technique, or other characteristics, real or im- aginary. Although aversion to Jews is exploited in anti-Semitic propaganda, anti-Semites do not merely agitate against Jews as undesirable citizens, but hold that they are engaged in a con- spiracy of world domination, in which some of them practice as Wall Street financiers, others as Communists, and yet others (whose purnose is to disarm the victim's races by destroying their national cultures) as economists, historians, psychoanalysts, com- posers of contemporary music and as non-representational art- ists. Substitute dollar imperialists for Jews as the enemy and the resemblance to the Communist mentality is close. He could as a Communist speaker have been equally facile." This is an interesting sociolog- ical-political analysis, but it is clear that Joyce's chief task was to propagate Fascism and for a time his "only hope' was the leader of the British Fascists, Oswald 11,los- ley. In reference to Mosley's work on Fascism, Cole states: "Beyond a fleeting mention of the Rothschilds in the section on finance, there was no reference to Jews. Deploring this omission, Joyce determined to push British Fascism toward anti-Semitism." Thus his anti-Semitic tendencies were indisputable. It is interesting to note in this connection that in 1932 Mosley visited Mussolini, seeking a mod- el for his Fascistic program. Cole states at this point: "Joyce read the news of this trip with inter- est but he thought that all Mos- ley could usefully study in Italy was the way to seize power; what the Italians had done in office was not to be copied, as they had failed to introduce the corporate state they seemed blind to the Jewish menace. Nothing more was to be expected of Wops, Joyce supposed. A rising politic- ian named Hitler was more to his taste. CASH FOR ISRAEL BONDS and SECURITIES "NON DUE" Phone 341-7998 And so Joyce's anti-Semitic be- ginnings dated back long before the war: he was the anti-Semite from the early years as a Fascist propagandist "For him diplomats were fops and dandies; noblemen's sons squandered their inheritances in night clubs drinking champagne with actresses and fell into Jewish money-lenders' clutches Seeking a seat in the London City Council, "more than half Joyce's election address was de- voted to attacking the Jews and he intensively canvassed non-Jew- ish shopkeepers . . ." He heiled Hitler, commended "the German Leader's gallant achievements against international Jewish Com- munism," constantly spoke about Jewish moneylenders and interna- tional finance, advocated that "Jews, whether Jewish by religion or not, were to be treated as aliens." Joyce had charged that the Pur- itans "had drunk all too deeply of Jewish philosophy." Wherever he could attack liberals he charged them with being Jewish-influenced. His street meetings f o m e n t e d trouble for Jewish merchants. At one point he was disturbed at the sight of a Jew wearing the Yellow Badq.e. Was he really upset because "harmless" Jews suffered? Cole states: "He was not a monster who wanted to drive living prisoners to a gas chamber, but a man pos- sessed by ideas and taken aback when theory became reality." The record compiled by Cole certainly depicts a vile anti-Semite. The "full story" of this ally of Hitler adds important data to available facts about the supporters of Hitler in democratic countries. Tel Aviv Named Site for Annual Parade; Jordan Fears Quieted (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) TEL AVIV—Israel's annual In- dependence Day military parade will be held in Tel Aviv this year, it was announced here Wednesday. Independence Day this year will be celebrated on May 6. The progress of Israel's army will be demon- strated through the parade. 1 Since this year will mark also the 20th anniversary of the end of World War II, the parade will also recall the contributions of the pre- war and wartime Jewish settle- ments in Palestine to the Allied victory in the war against the Nazis and Fascists. Special emphasis will be laid on the aid to victory given by the Jewish units in the Allied forces, including the Jewish Bri- gade. (At the Un!ted Nations, Wednes- day, it was pointed out that this report belies one issued there Tuesday by the Jordanian gov- ernment, which complained to the Security Council against an alleged Israeli plan to hold the Independence Day military pa- rade in Jerusalem. It was noted that the Independence Day pa- rades have been rotated by Israel in the last few years among var- ious cities, and that the last exhibition of Israel's military might held in Jerusalem was staged in 1961. (In a letter from Abdul Monem Rifai, Jordan's permanent repre- sentative to the U.N., the Jordan- ian government asserted that Is- rael's plans for a military parade in Jerusalem violate not only the 1949 armistice agreement but also "defy" a Security Council resolu- tion of 1961 in which the Council had requested that no show of mili- tary might be put on in Jerusalem. (Rifai noted in his letter that he had already complained to the Se- curity Council on this issue last week. He did not call for a meet- ing of the Security Council on the matter but requested only that his letter be circulated as an official document. ) THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 12—Friday, March 5, 1965 DOM Apocrypha The term "Apocrypha" is given to that literature which although written in biblical style, is not accepted by Jewish tradition as part of the Canon, and thus is not to be regarded as a part of the official Bible. The various books in this literature are referred to in Hebrew as "S'forim Chitzonim," which means the "outside books," indicating that they are to be regarded as outside the Canon and thus devoid of the sanctified stat- us of the regular biblical books that make up the Hebrew Canon- ical Scriptures. These books are valued for their historical, their literary and their comparative linguistic values. Some have come to regard the "Apocrypha" as a group of "secret writings" which the Greek term itself seems to imply. These writings were secret, either because they were ordered hidden by the authorities who re- jected them as non-biblical, or because their students "regarded them as having certain secret teachings which not everyone was allowed to have the privilege of studying.
