Doctors' Wives to Carry On Tradition
of Aid to Needy With Annual Show

Mrs. Alex Friedlaender, past president of the Women's Auxil-

Seven hundred women — a far
cry from the handful of doctors'
wives who founded the Women's
Auxiliary to the Maimonides Medi-
cal Society in 1925—are expected
at the organization's 19th annual
fashion show-luncheon benefit noon
March 16 in the Sheraton-Cadillac
Hotel grand ballroom.
"Unisphere of Fashion" is under
the chairmanship of Mrs. Charles
Gitlin, a founder and charter mem-
ber of the auxiliary which raises
funds for medical research and
scholarships, rehabilitation of the
handicapped, blind and emotionally
retarded children. Mrs. Howard B.
Appelman heads the 500-member
group.
Other chairmen are Mesdames I.
Walter Silver, past president, head-
ing metropolitan publicity and co-
ordinator of the general fund-
raising chairman; Saul Sakwa,
luncheon, and Alex Friedlaender
co-ordinator; Michael M. Levin
and David Schane, tickets; Louis S.
Leipsitz, reservations; and David
Morton and Victor S. Horvitz, sou-
venir book. assisted by J. Altman
and S. Gordon. Mrs. Israel Wiener,
past president is book coordinator,
and Mrs. Herbert Rosenbaum,

For education of medical stu-
dents at Wayne State University,
University of Michigan and the
Hebrew University Medical
School, Maimonides Women has
contributed $38,076.
The group has helped build a
clinical research laboratory at the
Hadassah-Hebrew University Medi-
cal Center for $15,000 and a lecture
room for the academic use of doc-
tors and nurses at Sinai Hospital,
$12: 000. It has supplied artificial
limbs for handicapped Israeli vet-
erans of the War for Independence,
and a plaque, dedicated to the aux-
iliary, flanks the entrance to the
Zamenhoff Orthopedic Clinic in Tel
Aviv. The inscription reads: "What
they have given of their lives, we
shall repair with our deeds."
Additional amounts of $23,340
have gone toward the Bellefaire
School for emotionally disturbed
children; the Detroit Association
for Retarded Children; the visually
handicapped through the Detroit
department of special education,
and the Jewish Institute for the
Blind, Israel; and at the Wayne
County Training School, Northville.
For the fourth time, auxiliary
displays received the League of
Jewish Women's Organizations'
first prize for originality and sec-
ond prize for artistic creation.

Organization Winners
in Display Competition
Announced by League

Winners of the organizational
displays competition sponsored by
the League of Jewish Women's Or-
anizations of Greater Detroit were
announced this week by Mrs. Sol
Hammerstein, president, and Mrs.
Marvin Levy, public relations vice
president.
First-prize winners for quality of
content, originality and artistic
quality were, respectively, National
Council of Jewish Women, Maimo-
nides Auxiliary and Friends of
Hillel Day School. The National
Council also was first in the pop-
ular vote.
Second prizes were won by Beth
Abraham Sisterhood and Alpha
Omega Dental Society Auxiliary.
Second and third place in the pop-
ular vote were the Jewish National
Fund and Jewish Women's Euro-
pean Welfare Organization, respec-
tively.
All League members were eli-
gible to enter. Judges were artist
Richard Koziow, Robert Garelick
and Lester B. Arwin.
