BONN -- Erwin Schuele, who
said in Warsaw earlier this week
that East German charges that he
had a Nazi past were "a pack of
lies" admitted Wednesday that he
had joined the Nazi party in 1937,
but he contended he had never
been active in any Nazi group.
Dr. Schuele made the statement
at a press conference in Stuttgart
on his return from Warsaw where,
at the invitation of the Polish gov-
ernment he had sifted captured
Nazi documents for new evidence
by Dr....Wolfgang Haussmann, jus-
tice minister of Baden-Wurttem-
berg. •
Dr. Schuele said he had not
known about this party member-
ship until a few days ago. He said
that as a student he had joined
the AS or Storm Troopers "which
I have never denied." He said he
had considered himself only an ap-
plicant for Nazi Party membership
adding that once he had not been
given a Nazi Party membership
book he believed he had not been
accepted. He added he had receiv-
ed information from .the Allied
Documents Center in Berlin where
there are personal files on mil-
lions of party members which con-
vinced him he had been accepted.
The justice minister said that
no action would be taken against
Dr. Schuele because "of his pro-
ven clean record." The federal)
government also has expressed I
confidence in the prosecutor. Dr.
Schuele said he had been a soldier
from 1938 until 1945.
He also told the press confer-
ence that he and five other West
German attorneys had found new ,
incriminating evidence against
former Nazis in the Warsaw
material. He said he and the other
attorneys had filmed some of the
incriminating material and brought
some back to Stuttgart. He said no
new complexes of Nazi war crimes
had been uncovered, only material
against individuals.

Common Problems in

PARIS (JTA) — Jewish leaders
from the United,States, Israel and

common interest to Jewries in all
three areas.
Participating organizations were
the Jewish Agency for Israel, the
Council of Jewish Federations and
Welfare Funds, the Standing Con-
ference of European Jewish Com-
munity Services and the American
Joint Distribution Committee. The
JDC served as host.
Subjects discussed during the
sessions included Jewish educa-

The need to open more Jewish
schools and to further contribute
to the strengthening of the French
Jewish community was stressed at
another Jewish conference in
Paris. The occasion was an extra-
ordinary conclave called by the
French Zionist as a sequel to the
26th World Zionist Congress in
Jerusalem last month.

A protest against the possibility
of a probe was filed with the com-

that the committee had "no author- I
