Czech Director Asks Israel- Asylum

TEL AVIV (JTA)—Peter Freistadt. the Czechoslovakian stage
director who came here to direct a play by the Ohel Theater, asked
for asylum at Lydda Airport Monday after he was already aboard his
plane, to return home:
He will be permitted to remain in Israel in accordance with this
country's Law of Return which allows any Jew abroad the right
to emigrate to Israel.
During his visit here, it was suggested that Freistadt, who has
no yelatives in Czechoslovakia, remain in Israel. 'He decided, "how-
ever to return home.
He boarded his plane for the return flight ) to Europe, but, after
the doors of the aircraft Arelre shut and the stairs were removed,
he asked to be allowed off the plane. After disembarking. he
approached the first policeman he saw - for permission to remain in
Israel.

Katzenbach Opens Senate Testimony
on Johnson Immigration Proposals

gration bill before a Senate Immi- .
gration subcommittee.
The President's proposals, which
are designed to eliminate the Na-
tional Origins Quota System, were
submitted in a special message to
Congress last •month.
Katzenbach— urged abolition of
the present system. He said "in
such a system nf selection, personal
pedigree is an intolerable stand-

ard, inhumane. rigidity is an intol-
erable method. and national self
deprivation is an absurd sacrifice."
Katzenbach charged that the pres-
ent selection factors "are most
alien to America" and must be
changed.
The purpose of the new legis-
lation, he said, is "to help us
choose among potential Ameri-
cans according to standards that
are fairer to them and more
beneficial to us."
Sen. Jacob K. Javits, New York
Republican, -testified in support
of a proposal he and Sens. Wayne
Morse. Oregon Democrat, and Jo-
seph Clark, Pennsylvania Demo-
crat. are introducing to expedite
elimination of the quota system.
Javits charged that the existing
immigration policy "has produced
an incredible epic of broken lives,
divided families. case after case
of anguish, despair and -frustra-
tion." He continued by saying the
present policy "opens our national
doors wide for many people who
do not care to come in and slams
them in the faces of people who
would cherish the opportunity to
be U.S. citizens."

Urges Law Against Bias

TORONTO (JTA) — Immediate
enactment of anti-discrimination
laws in Alberta was urged by the
provincial Liberal Party. This is
an opposition party in a province
which has been ruled by Social
Credit for almost 30 years.
The resolution, approved at the
party's annual convention, calls
for legislation prohibiting discrim-
ination in public accommodation,
employment, housing and public
services on the basis of race, color
and creed.

Prof. Levi, Succumbs

TURIN (JTA) — Prof. Giuseppe
Levi, a member of the Italian
Academy of Sciences and one of
Italy's leading physicians and
anatomists, died here in retirement
at age of 93. He had been a lead-
. ing figure in Italian culture, educa-
tion and Jewish life.
Prof. Levi was repeatedly at-
, tacked during the fascist regime
of Mussolini because of support he
gave to known foes of the regime.

NEW YORK (JTA—Dr. Nahum
Goldmann, president of the World
Zionist Organization, has called
upon American Jewry to support
the 1965 campaign of the United
Jewish Appeal, and has strongly
endorsed the building of a "House
of Jewish Communities" in Israel
to be made possible by UJA's Coun-
cil of Organizations. He spoke at
a meeting, which took place at the
Astor Hotel, at which the Council
discussed development of plans for
its 1965 fund-raising drive.
Urging the construction of the
House of Jewish Communities as a
"monument of monuments for
world _Jewry," Dr. Goldmann said:
"This will be a museum for Euro-
pean Jewry, for the Galician,
Polish, Lithuanian, Hungarian,
Czechoslovak, Romanian and other
Jews. It will be a museum devoted
to the great achievements of Euro-
pean Jewry during one thousand
years of history."
This great museum, the Bet Hat-
fuzot, will be established in the
heart of Tel Aviv, on the campus
of Tel Aviv University, and will be
the largest building there.
