tradition became an accepted law
in the Shulehan Aruch (Yoreh
Deah 265-10).
Is it required to have a
minyan (quorum of 10 adult
Jewish males) present for a
circumcision?
The Shulchan Aruch (Yoreh
Dean 265:6) states that wherever
possible the circumcision should
he performed in the presence of
a minyan, although when no
minyan is available it can be
performed without a minyan.
Some claim that the presence of
ten is preferred because on this
occasion one offers public thanks
to the Almighty for having de-
livered the child. and offering
thanks to the Almighty for having
been delivered requires a minyan.
Others claim that the circumcision
is to he preferentially performed
before a minyan because it bears
public testimony of the covenant.
and public testimony is rendered
in the presence of a minyan.
Why is it customary to place
the foreskin that has been re-
moved during the process of
circumcision in earth or sand?
Generally speaking. since the
foreskin was the remains of a
sacred act it was not to be dis-
carded in a haphazard manner.
Apparently it was the custom to
store it in some fashion. Some
localities used to place the fore-
skins in a special box with earth
and when the box was filled. they
would bury the contents in the
cemetery. The Midi-ash (D'varim
Rabbah 2:24 relates an incident
during the Roman period whereby
a certain widow was able to prove
that her husband was circumcised
because the severed foreskin had
been preserved and stored. Some
authorities like to trace this prac-
tice to the account in the Midrash
of the incident where Joshua com-
