Emotional Disturbances
in Children Linked to Lack
of Religious Knowledge

NEW YORK (JTA)—Teamwork
between religion and psychiatry
for the prevention and the treat-
ment of emotional disturbance in
children was called for by a lead-
ing psychoanalyst at a conference
of prominent psychiatrists, social
workers and rabbis.
The conference was held under
the auspices of the commission
on synagogue relations of the
Federation of Jewish Philan-
thropies.
Dr. Hector Ritey, medical di-
rector of the Metropolitan Center
of Mental Health, said that the
lack of religious knowledge and
experience is the "common de-
nominator" that is "the underly-
ing cause" of a wide spectrum of
emotional disturbances in chil-
dren.
He stressed that religion,
through the process of abstract
thought, enables a child to ex-
plain the unknown and under-
stand the ties that bind him to
mankind He indicated that the
alternative to this "sense of be-
longing" is "a vacuum" and said
that "the role of religious sym-
bols and practices in the family
is paramount and irreplaceable."
Calling religious education "the
antagonist of the gap of insecuri-
ty, from which emotional disturb-
ances in childhood emanate , " Dr.
Ritey said that, despite the opinion
of free thinkers, it is "the most
free-minded approach to the needs
of the joungsters."
He added that religious educa
tion teaches the deeper meaning
of life, revealing "the theological
meaning of work and of knowl-
edge, its significance in terms of
continuity in time, space and
depth, and how every human ac-
tivity branches into a much broad-
er aim than the immediate and
practical goal."

Why is the Kaddish recited in
Aramaic instead of Hebrew?
54 Wall St., NYC

Why do traditional Jews re-
tain the practice of reciting their
prayers only in Hebrew?

ISRAEL
BONDS

The practical basis for this
practice lies in the fact that the
Kaddish is not really a prayer. It
is rather a form of benediction_ Its
origin was that of being an epi-
logue recited in the form of a ben-
ediction after a public study ses-
sion. Since the language of study
at the time the original Kaddish
came to be recited was Aramaic,
the Kaddish was therefore also re-
cited in Aramaic. Since its original
language was Aramaic, the text was
retained in Aramaic, even at the
time when the Kaddish came to be.
used as interspersed benedictions
which separated sections of the
prayer liturgy. The commentaries
on the Siddur also furnished a
mystical explanation. They stated
that the Kaddish is recited in
Aramaic because the Angels could
not understand Aramaic and thus
those angels who seek to prevent
the prayers of Israel from reaching
the Almighty would not recognize
the Kaddish as a praise to the Al-
mighty and a benediction and thus
could not stand in its way before
the Almighty.

In other words, one might ex-
plain this as a contention that the-
Kaddish is an exclusively human
exercise. While Angels also sing
God's praises, humans add the feat-
ure of interspersing their prayers
with an expression of hope and
confidence that their prayers will
be accepted and that the better
day they are praying for will come
—an experience not understood by
angels who are regarded as auto-
matic servants who instinctively
serve the heavenly master with no
regard as to the consequence of
their efforts.
