The Council told the German
authorities that the statute must
be extended beyond next May or
abolished altogether as in France.
It insisted that Germany must
recognize the fact that the Nazi
deeds are "not comparable to nor-
mal crimes."

A dispatch from Warsaw re-
-, ported that Stefen Cardinal
Wyszynski, Roman Catholic pri-
mate of Poland, urged that trials
against Nazis be permitted in 1
West Germany after May 8, say-
I ing "The time to forgive and
forget is not yet ripe. The devil
that flourished must be torn out
by the roots."

The Bonn government's official
spokesman. Secretary of State Gun-
ther von Hasse refused to comment
on a statement made two weeks
ago by Justice Minister Ewald
Bucher, who had said that he
would resign if the statute of limi-
tations were to be prolonged.

Meanwhile, Hans Walter Zech-
Nenntwich, a convicted war crim-
inal, who escaped from jail last
summer while serving a sentence

for his murder of Polish Jews,

received an additional 10-month
prison sentence in a Brunswick

court. He was convicted of bribery
and instigation to jailbreak.

Germany's plans to permit the
statute to take effect.
Dr. Clause Curtius, the West
German consulate-general in New
York, told the delegation that he

knew of "no legal or constitutional
reason" why the Bonn parliament
should not act to extend the dead-
line for another 10 years.
He told the delegation that,
even if the parliament did not do
so, a judge - can and will" order
proceedings after May 8 in any
case where a reasonable suspicion
"has been felt before May 8." He
added that he nevertheless felt
"most strongly" that every Nazi
war criminal should be brought
to justice.
Dr. Curtius told the delegation
that many sections of the German
people wanted the prosecutions to•
be ended. He accepted a brief from
the delegation and said, after the
two - hour meeting, that he would
inform his government of every-
thing said at the meeting.
