The Livonia Knights Inn, Seven.
Mile Road just west of Middlebelt,
is the fulfillment of a dream for
Roco Ferrera, owner and local con-
tractor.
In Minnesota several years ago,
Ferrera saw a restaurant inn that
made the building of Livonia
Knights his ultimate ambition.
With a medieval-modern decor the
Inn is named for a band of courag-
eous warriors that roamed in Eur-
ope.

Senior Citizen Stresses
the Need for Low-Rental
Housing for Dignity'

Editor: The Jewish News:
Where shall we go? The need
for a lower-rental apartment for
Jewish senior citizens is very
urgent. We cannot run away from
old age, and we now live longer,
the statistics say.
There are many people who can-
not afford high-rental apartments,
yet still have the desire to live in
a dignified way.
Where shall we go? What can be
done about it?

BY CHARLOTTE HYAMS
It was a sentimental journey of
sorts. But the sight of the Chrysler
Freeway, and its uncaring stream
of cars whizzing by, just about
killed the whole thing.
Grandpa's store had been here
—on once-fashionable Hastings
Street, between Rowena and Elliot.
Now, "Ruth's Dry Goods Store
With New York Prices" is only a
few faded photographs and the
memory of stories he used to tell
about the wondrous emporium at
No. 633.
When Harry Ruda brought his
wife Annie and the children to De-
troit in 1911, the automotive hub
was little more thah a few spokes,
like Woodward and Jefferson. Why,
next to New York, it looked like
a farm town !
But, after all, what more could
a one-time greenhorn ask of the
United States of Paradise?
So, Harry set up shop in Pola-
sky's building on Hastings Street,
right next door to Raskins Hard-
ware. True, the Raskin boys
looked mischievous, (he'd have
to keep an eye on his daughters
when they grew older and helped
out in the store), but it was a
good Jewish neighborhood. A
shul only blocks away. !
There wasn't a thing you
couldn't get in Harry's store --
bolts of polished cotton. celluloid
and Arrow collars, rosebud per-
fume, lace and ribbons, American
Lady corsets, pounds of remnants
(oh, how Harry's daughters loved
to rummage through those rem-
nants !).
If- you had a question on the
Talmud, that, too, could be han-
dled. Not for nothing had Harry `
Ruda started heder in Prushnitz.

Even if you were short of funds
