Bnai. Zion Aids Mentally Retarded
in Israel; Honors Ernest Barbarash

JERUSALEM — A group
of American Zionists has under-
taken the urgent task of assisting
in solving the problems of the re-
tarded, whose numbers have grown
here as a result of the vast immi-
gration of Jews from underdevel-
oped Moslem countries.

The Order Bnai Zion. whose
strength in the United States has
grown to a membership of 24,000,
contributes towards the solution of
the problem of children with low

accordance with the categories in
which they can be helped."
Dr. Levine said that in the sal-
veging process 28 children already
have been helped to return to fair-
ly normal pursuits. eight of them
being back in their own homes;
that 10 of the youngsters now are
able fully to integrate as workers
in an industrial plant and that an-
other category is being taught
trades.
"In this fashion, we hope to be
able to salvage many. many chil-
dren," Dr. Levine said.
He said that there is a measure
of true humaneness in the effort
exerted. He pointed out that in
the course of testing two children
were found not to be retarded at
all. They were deaf and are now
receiving proper care.
There is a waiting list of 200
children to be admitted to the Bnai
Zion institutions, Dr. Levine said.
