Irvin Faust has a remarkably fine style. His resort to the ver- nacular is skillful. He is a master of the narrative art, as proven in his "Roar Lion Roar," the collec- tion of short stories published by Random House. He is able, when writing about farmers, to use the earthy lan- guage of the rural characters. He masters the Negro pronunciations. He understands his Jewish char- acters. Yet, there is a reservation on the latter. His "Jake Bluffstein and Adolf Hitler" puzzles the review- er. Why such negativism? What accounts for the hatred for Jews akin to Hitler's, for the psycho- pathic outbursts of the "hero" of this story? If Faust had called it "Self Hatred," the theme would be understandable. But in its pres- ent form, under the title given the narrative, it is a self- mocking tale. How else is one to account for "the sneaky little questions" sug- gested by: "Was it iraybe Rosen- feld after all. and not Roosevelt? Or at least maybe an international deal? . . . Was Father Coughlin all wrong? . . . Were the Protocols all phoney? If — listen good now —if there were no Jews, would there be a war? Ah there it is, Bluffstein. after ten years.
