It was aimed against West Ger- many's refusal to extend its stat- ute of limitations on Nazi war crimes and its disregard of appeals to recall scientists from Egypt. SiMilar expressions took place simultaneously in a number of Jewish communities throughout the United States. Led by 'Sidney M. Shevitz, pres- ident of the Jewish Community Council, the local demonstration was intended to call attention to N'Vest Germany's "evasion of its moral responsibilities." The present West German statute of limitations for all crimes, including murder, makes it impossible to prosecute Ger- man war criminals after May 8, the 20th anniversary of VE Day, unless prosecution was started prior to that date. Detroit leaders of national or- ganizations. together with rabbis and other Jewish community lead- ership. participated in the gather- ing • at the local consulate. Local participants also included organ- izations of survivors of Nazi con- centration camps. A memorandum submitted to the German Consul on behalf of the protesting groups stressed that ma- jor crimes against humanity can- not be regarded as ordinary crimes. "nor can they be subject only to the provision of ordinary domes- tic codes." A protest was endorsed by or- ganizational representatives to the Booklet Outlines Rules Following Baines Birth Utley-Saywitz Troth Is Announced Here A booklet detailing procedures in Jewish tradition following the birth of a child is being distri- buted locally.
