Detroiters Join
Reform Leaders
at Poverty Parley
WASHINGTON (JTA) — Rabbi
Leon .Feuer, president of the Cen-
tral Conference of American Rab-
bis. has • called for a three-faith
mobilization to combat poverty and
economic problems in the United
States.
The CCAR Committee on Justice
and Peace opened a two-day study
session with experts from govern-
ment, labor, management, econom-
ic and social leaders to prepare
a position paper on the question
and define the role of the rabbi
in community and synagogue work.
Rabbi Feuer saw the poverty is-
Ale "as another area in which the
religions of America could unite
forces as they did on civil rights."
Detroit Rabbis Richard C. Hertz
of Temple Beth El and Leon Fram
of Temple Israel attended the con-
ference.
Commenting after the confer-
ence conclusion. Dr. Hertz said.
"Just as the civil rights revolution
did not succeed until the churches
and synagogues supplied the moral
force to propel it forward,.so the
poverty program will never get off
the ground until the religious
forces of America stand united and
awaken the conscience of America
to combat poverty, illiteracy, dis-
ease and despair.
"Religious leaders must lead.
They must translate the pulpit's re-
ligious idealism into moral concern
on the part of the pew."
