Erna Michael, NY Leader Nathan Spevakow Dies;
and Philanthropist, Dies Active in Zionist Group

NEW YORK (JTA)-Mrs. Erna
Sondheimer Michael, former chair-
man of the Greater New York
United Jewish Appeal's women's
division and co-donor of the Erna
and Jakob Michael. Institute of
Biomedical Research of the Albert
Einstein College of Medicine at
Yeshiva University, died Dec. 30
at her home here at age 59.
She was also a co-founder of
the Einstein .Medical College and
of the Nevei Michael Children's
Village of the Hapoel Hamizrachi
in Israel. She served on the board
of the American Friends of the
Hebrew University and was a co-
founder of its JeruSalem campus.
Recently, she and her husband
had arranged to transfer the an-
cient Italian Synagogue of 'Vit-
torio Veneto to Jerusalem and do-
nated it to the Bezalel National
Museum.
Born in -Frankfurt, she was the
daughter of Dr. Albert Sondheim-
er, industrialist and Jewish com-
munal leader. She married Jakob
Michael, a leading industrialist and
philanthropist. The couple lived in
Germany and Holland before set-
tling in the United States in 1939.

Nathan Spevakow, active mem-
ber of the Zionist Organization,
died Jan. 1 at age 71.
Russian-born Mr. Spevako w,
20003 Renfrew, was a biochemist
with Difco Laboratories for 46
years. A graduate of Northeastern
University in Boston, he was a
member of the Michigan Academy
of Science and the American Chem-
ical Society.
Among his affiliations were the
Zionist Organization of America,
Jewish National Fund, Perfection
Lodge, F. & A.M., Detroit Consis-
tory and Cong. Shaarey Zedek.
Mr. Spevakow leaves his wife,
Sadie; two daughters, Marcia E.
and Mrs. Selwyn Friedlander; two
sisters, Lea and Mrs. Helen Tay-
mor; and three grandchildren.

Oscar Warren Dies

Oscar Warren, a member of the
Jewish Community Council and
active worker for the Allied Jew-
ish Campaign business • section,
died Dec. 30. He was 78.
Mr. Warren, who came to De-
troit in 1916 from Russia, was in
the hardware and paint business
here for almost 50 years. His

Moses Farachi of Girgenti, a
13th Century Jewish physician,
was responsible for the in-
troduction into Europe of much
of the Arabic medical knowledge
of his time. He translated Arabic
medical works into Latin for King
Charles I of Anjou.

Irving M. Winston Dies;
Was With Little League

Irving (Suzy) M. Winston, co-
owner of Winston Brothers Iron
and Metal Co. and active in North-
west Little League baseball, died
Jan. 1 at age 40.
Mr. Winston. a native of Detroit,
lived at 19749 Kentucky. A World
War II veteran, he belonged to
Bnai Brith and was a member of .
Cong. Ahavas Achim.
Surviving Mr. Winston are his
wife, Bernice; four sons, Paul,
Peter, Joel and Jonathan; his fath-
er, Harry Weinstein; three brothers
and two sisters.
