Prof. Reginals Horsman of the
University of Wisconsin is the
author of the newest volume
issued by Wayne State University
Press.
His "Matthew Elliott, British
Indian Agent," a biographical ac-
count, enriches the history of the
Revolutionary period. A native of
Ireland, Elliott came to America
in 1761, at the age of 31, traded in
Ohio Valley and Pennsylvania,
fled from Fort Pitt in 1778 to join
the British at Detroit and until
his death in 1814 was a British
Indian agent at Smhertsburg and
Detroit.
This story of a trader describes
the feuds of that era, dealings with
the Indians and throws much light
on the history of the late 18th and
early 19th centuries.
