Canadian Jews Honor Pioneer on 95th Birthday Sylvia Ravin will be guest speak- er at the pre-donor meeting of the Women's Auxiliary, Jewish Na- tional Fund, 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Beth Aaron Synagogue. Mrs. Ravin, a past-president of the auxiliary, will relate her ob- servations on a recent Mediter- ranean trip, with particular stress on Israel and its progress. Mrs. Ravin is a national board member of Foundation for JNF; secretary of the League of Worn- en's Organizations in Detroit; a member of the Cultural Commis- sion of the Jewish Community Council and of the Internal Rela- tions Committee. Also featured on the program will be Mrs. Jacob Axelrod, who will render a medley of songs. She will be accompanied by Mrs. Jerome Levey. Since this meeting will be the last before the culminating donor tea, Jan. 26 at Temple Israel, Mrs. Morris Kutinsky, auxiliary presi- dent, announced that progress re- ports on donor activities will be submitted by the program and donor chairmen. Particular emphasis in this year's donor campaign will be placed on the special effort to obtain the first 100 "Charter In- scribers" on the Pillars of Courage, a project which the Auxiliary start- ed a year ago. Following, is a partial list of inscribers secured as of Dec. 24, each of whom will receive a pla- que in recognition of his gener- osity: A number of Detroiters were present for the recent testimonial dinner to Echiel Silverman of Toronto on the occasion of his 95th birthday. Over $6,000 was raised for an endowment fund in his name. Father of Detroiters Max Silver- man and Sam Silverton, the honoree was cited by the Brother- hood of Adath Israel Synagogue for 57 years' service to the con- gregation. Mr. Silverman, retired owner of a cleaning and pressing business, came to Toronto from Romania with his wife Chanah and children in 1907. His initial affiliation with Adath Israel was when it was known as the First Romanian Hebrew Con- gregation. Since that time, he has served in many capacities, as a member of the executive, treasurer, member of the chevra kadisha, gabba and as president. Besides his two sons in Detroit, Mr. Silverman has three sons and a daughter in Toronto, Al, Sid, Nor- man and Mrs. Min Crozer; and 11 grandchildren and 17 great- grandchildren.
