Jews were 19.9 per cent of the
population of Kishinev and of Kiev,

cent in Homel, 9.5 per • cent • in
Zhitomir, 6.9 per cent in Vilna,1

Yiddish as their mother • tongue
also included 70 per cent of the

that:

Dr. Isidor Margolis, director of
the National Council for Torah
Education and assistant professor
of education at Yeshiva University,
is the author of "Jewish Teacher
Training Schools in the United
States," published by the National
Torah Education Council (200
Park, S.. NY3).
This is a study of the status of
schools devoted to teacher train-
ing. It assesses the achievements
of such schools and it utilizes the
knowledge and experience of edu-
cators in a number of communities.
Emphasis is placed on the Gratz
College, Philadelphia; Baltimore
Hebrew College, Yeshiva Univer-
sity Teachers Institute, the Chi-
cago College, New York's Herzliah
Teachers' Seminary and other
schools. It falls short of thorough-
ness by virtue of its having been
limited to the earlier teacher train-
ing programs, thus eliminating the
newer schools, like the Midrasha
of the United Hebrew Schools of
Detroit.
For educators and for laymen
who are anxious to solve the
teacher shortage problem, this
volume serves as an excellent
guide. The information offered
in statistical tables is especially
relevant to the needs.

A $100,000 trust fund for the
Hebrew University of Jerusalem
has been established by Joseph M.
Shapiro, chairman of the board of
Simplicity Patterns, it was an-
nounced by the American. Friends
of the Hebrew University. The gift
was made in conjunction with the
recently established Dr. Joseph J.
Schwartz Fund for Leadership
Training at the Hebrew Univer-
sity.
