Bnai Brith OKs Proposal to Formalize
Structure of World Coordinating Body

NEW YORK (JTA)—Bnai Brith
announced endorsement of a pro-
posal to strengthen the World Con-
ference of Jewish Organizations
(COJO), worldwide coordinating
body, by replacing its "informal
procedures" with a more formal
organizational structure.
The action virtually assured
broader and more intensive activity
by the World Conference. Its nine
other constituent groups had pre-
viously accepted the proposed
change. Approval by Bnai Brith
had been viewed as "necessary"
because of its size and influence,
and the fact that it operates in 43
countries.
Bnai Brith also agreed to
plans for converting the present

Conference of Presidents of Ma-
jor Organizations to a "Confer.
ence of American Organizations."

The Conference of Presidents,
organized in 1954. has heretofore

and Oct. 6, the Day of Atonement.

T%e action means that Jewish
employes of the school district of
Philadelphia will no longer suf-
fer a deduction in pay for re-
maining out on the Holy Days.
New York and other major cities
with large Jewish populations
passed similar resolutions in
prior years, closing schools for
the High Holy Days.

Senior Citizens
Seek Sponsor for
Low-Rent Housing

The call went out this week for
a sponsor of a proposed non-profit,
low-rental housing project for
senior citizens.
Hyman Lifshitz and Morris Hur-
witz, co-chairmen of the housing
project for the Council of Jewish
Senior Citizens of Detroit, issued
the plea to Jewish community
leaders, organizations and spiritual
leaders in the area.
They pointed out that housing
near Jewish communal services is
needed by independent older citi-
zens who prefer a cooperative
apartment over a home for the
aged but cannot afford high rents.
With sponsorship by an es-
tablished organization, the pro-
ject would be financed by the
federal government or private
funds under Section 231 of the
National Housing Act.
Hurwitz said appeals to the
Jewish Community Council and the
Jewish Welfare Federation have
met with "sympathy" to their ef-
forts, but such sponsorship could
not be accorded at this time. A
similar project is sponsored by
the welfare federation in Atlantic
City, Hurwitz said, and a women's
organization has endorsed another
in Cleveland.
The Council of Jewish Senior
Citizens of Detroit is affiliated with
the Jewish Center.
