Section B, Page 2 DETROIT JEWISH NEWS, December 18, 1964 Editorial Tribute to Max M. Fisher Indelible Marks of an Able Leader A great trust has been placed in the hands of a distinguished Detroit fellow-citizen. The selection of Max M. Fisher for the major philanthropic role in world Jewry—the national general chairmanship of the United Jewish Appeal—is, in reality, a continuation of the confidence that first was placed in his leadership by our own community and now is being pursued in the recognition given his dedication to the important relief movements by the national movement. For more than a decade, Mr. Fisher has been gaining fame—first as the organizer of a new oil industry and then. much more significantly. as an inspired leader in humanitarian movements. As president of the Detroit Jewish Welfare Federation. as chairman of the most successful Allied Jewish Campaign ever to be conducted here—the 1957 drive which netted nearly $6,000,000 in contributions—and as the national co-chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, he left indelible marks in inspirational leadership. There is a first principle in fund-raising: that a person who solicits others must himself be as generous as he would have others be in their response to community causes. Mr. Fisher set an example to others by his magnanimous gifts. his high standards for con- tributions to worthy causes, his continuously mounting gifts to the UJA nationally and to the major causes locally. The non-Jewish community, too, recognized his merits as a leader, and lie was chosen as the Torch Drive chairman in 1961. That year he led in setting the highest record for the amount of money raised in a single communitywide interfaith and interracial campaign — nearly $20,000,000 having been subscribed that year in Detroit's great philanthropic endeavor — and his name ranks today among the most brilliant of the leaders in fund-raising projects. Israel owes him a great debt; not only has he consistently labored for UJA: he has been among the top supporters of the Israel Bond drives and he has established a high record for service by his personal investments in private industrial undertakings in support of Israel's developing economy. It was as a result of the high esteem in which he is held nationally that he was named one of the members of the new American Section of the Jewish Agency for Israel, Inc.—the committee of 21 select men and women who are guiding the policies and fund-distributing needs in behalf of Israel—and was named treasurer of that important committee. Modest, unassuming, dedicated to public service. Max M. Fisher has endeared himself locally and nationally. We share in the appreciation that is being shown widely for his great gifts and wish him continued success in his new position.
