What is an "Apikorus"? What
is the derivation of this term?
Many regard the term as de-
rived from the name of the philo-
sopher Epicurus. In this sense it
might have originally referred to
a follower of the Greek Philoso-
pher. i.e. an Epicurean who, more
or less, excludes the role of God
Another trend of thought asso-
ciates the expression with the
root from which comes the talmu-
dic term - Hafker" which implies a
sense of "abandonment." An Api-
korus is thus one who has aban-
doned God. or who has abandoned
religious values or principles.
Thus, in Tannaitic times an Api-
korus was one who expressed
heretical beliefs In the time of
the Amoraim its use was broad-
ened further to include one who
shows a flagrant disrespect for
Rabbis or for the authority of the
Rabbis. Its later use was broad-
ened to include anyone who had
some kind of heresy in his be-
lief or disbelief. Interesting is the
fact that in modern times many
Rabbis have stated the opinion
that to-day there is not a real Api-
korus amongst Jews. since ancient
heresies no longer seem to exist.
at least amongst Jews. In collo-
quial usage the term has been
broadened to include anyone who
is skeptical or licentious.

Holding the Torah while chant-
ing certain prayers in the syna-
gogue is symbolic of .bringing the
whole of the community of the
Jewish people into focus with the
particular prayer. There is a gen-
eral rule that one may not offer
individual prayers or prayers for
individuals on the Sabbath be-
cause every individual is supposed
to feel perfectly satisfied on the
Sabbath. Yet, on occasions such
as Yahrzeit. one feels the need to
offer a prayer for the individual
deceased. Therefore one holds the
Torah as if to demonstrate that
while one mentions and has in
mind the single soul he is praying
for. nevertheless he prays for this
I soul amongest all the souls of Is-
rael who have gone to the great
beyond. Thus the prayer becomes
a prayer for all souls and is thus
permissible on the Sabbath.
Others say that holding the
Torah while praying for the de-
ceased on the Sabbath is a spit-
bolic way of stating that the soul
of the deceased is as immortal as
the words of the Torah which live
on forever.
