Photos Reveal Auschwitz Murders;
Witness Collapses After Testimony

Witnesses at three Nazi war
crimes trials presented important
evidence against concentration

camp aides.
At the largest of the three trials,

Auschwitz workers are charged

toria, where the burned remains
of recently gassed Jews are vis-
ible. In other photos, SS guards
herd thousands of Jews, from

babies to old people, into the

' gas chambers.

Photographs showed laughing in a court room as he was about

Italy signed and ratified the
anti-genocide convention some
years ago but, to date, has enacted
no legislation implementing the
UN document. A number of jurists
here have objected to the UN con- i
vention's provision about the extra-
dition of persons charged with
genocide.
They hold that such a law
would be contrary to the Italian
Constitution. Sever al requests
for the extradition of Nazi war
criminals deemed guilty of geno-
cide have been denied by the
Italian courts.

The second measure is being ad-
vocated by a group of members of
the Socialist Party, the party to

which the government belongs
now. This draft would eliminate
clauses in the penal code differ-
entiating between offenses against
the state religion and punishment
for acts against minority religions.

the camp.
Judge Gottlebe asked the man
if he could identify any of the
defendants as murders. Rappaport
started toward the table where
the defendants sat, gasped, whis-
pered that he could not breathe
and fell unconscious.
In Vienna, a former member
of the Budapest Jewish Council
who negotiated several times
with Franz Novak testified at
the former Gestapo officer's
trial that Novak certainly knew
of the fate of those he helped
to send to the Auschwitz death
camp as Adolph Elchmann's
transport officer.
Philip Von Freudiger, whose
duties in 1944 included negotia-
tions with Eichmann, accused No-
vak of having personally directed
the transport of 1.500 Jewish men,
women and children from Camp
Kistrcsa to Auschwitz.
Novak has denied that he knew
of the Nazi plan to kill every Jew
seized in the lightning conquests
of European countries during
World War II .
Freudiger also testified that
two Jews who escaped from Ausch-
witz sent SOS messages to Britain
and t h e United States, asking
them to bomb railroad lines on
%which the death transports were
rolling but nobody "had an ear"
for tile appeals. Novak is on
trial on charges of complicity in
thousands of Nazi murders.
