1964, Jewish

Meet Max M. Fisher, the new general chairman of the United
Jewish Appeal for 1965. . . Charming, warm-hearted, generous and a
great humanitarian, he considers himself a "grass roots man" born
and raised as a community man . .. His philosophy is that a good Jew
is a good American . . . And his record shows more than 25 years
active engagement in general and Jewish communal activities . . .
He practices what he preaches, when he says that any person who
considers himself a Jew must be involved in communal action . . .
American-born, he started his philanthropic contributions to national
Jewish causes in his student days with a $5. gift to the United Jewish
Appeal . . . Today he is one of the largest contributors to the WA,
and perhaps the largest single giver . . . He is also a large contributor
to other causes, Jewish and non-Jewish . . . He finds great satisfaction
in giving and in actively participating in communal endeavors . . . In
Detroit, where he resides, he served as president of the Jewish Welfare
Federation for five years and is now chairman of its executive com-
mittee . . He has served as chairman of the Detroit Allied Jewish
Campaign of which the UJA is a major beneficiary . . . Devoted as he
is to Jewish communal activities, he plays .no small role also in non-
Jewish communal work . . . He headed the United Foundation, the
community chesi of Detroit and the largest united fund in the
country, which is responsible for raising the funds for more than 200
health and community services . . . Detroit's Allied Jewish Campaign
raised the largest sum in its history when he was its chairman . . . He
is a firm believer in the Jewish federation system and in federated
giving . . . This stems from his philosophy that we need a strong
Jewish community in the United States no less than in countries
overseas . . . However, he places the activity for the United Jewish
Appeal above all other Jewish activities.

Impressive Record
I have had the pleasure of observing very closely Mr. Fisher's
interest also in work for Israel . . . In addition to the fact that he has
long been active in Israel Bonds, he is co-treasurer of the Jewish
Agency for Israel, Inc. . . . He has been to Israel 25 times since the
establishment of the state; ten of these visits were made by him as a
member of the UJA Study Missions made up of top American Jewish
leaders . . . His interest in Israel is not confined to philanthropy . .
As a nationally prominent figure in the American petroleum industry,
and as a member of the American Petroleum Institute. he helped the
Israel government no little with advice on its growing refining industry
• . He invested millions in oil development in Israel and established
the pexro-chemical indcstry in Israel with a first investment of $16.000. -
000 . . . Today, ht. is the vice-chairman of Israel Petro-Chemical Enter-
prises of which he was previously the board chairman . . . He is a
director of Paz Oil C-Impany, Israel's largest distributor of petroleum
products . . . As co-treasurer of the Jewish Agency for Israel he holds
the key to the philanthropic funds which American Jewry sends to
the Jewish Agency in Israel for immigration and settlement of tens
of thousands of immigrants every year . . A person of great kindness,
he sees in the funds which UJA sends to Israel not merely the , dollars
but the people saved by these dollars and brought to Israel a life of
dignity .. . He is highly respected by the Israel government as a Jew,
as a humanitarian and as a devoted friend of Israel.

Threats to Survival of Judaism Told
at Parley of Rabbis, Social Workers
.
PHILADELPHIA (JTA) — The
"fantastic rate" at which Ameri-
can Jews have taken on the cul-
ture of the majority, plus a high
rate of intermarriage and a low
rate of fertility, pose grave threats
to the survival of a Jewish corn-
munity in this country, two Jewish
experts told an unprecedented con-
ference of rabbis and Jewish social
workers and educators here.
Two hundred members of the
Philadelphia Board of . Rabbis and
the Association of Jewish Agency
Executives were at the first joint
meeting of the two organizations.
Dr. Mordecai Kaplan, founder of
the Reconstructionist movement,
and Dr. Marshall Sklare, director
of research of the American Jew-
ish Committee, issued the warn-
ings.
Dr. Kaplan said that the Jewish
people in this country was in
danger of "succumbing to the kiss
of death," the modern climate of
democracy and naturalism in which
American Jews are being inte-
grated.
He suggested education, ethical
power and reorganization of. Jew-
ish life and thought to strength-
en the cohesiveness of the Jewish
people, and called for efforts to
unify Jews and the Jewish re-
ligion across the lines of denom-
inational differences. "We Jews
must inaugurate an ecumenism
of our own," he said.
Dr. Sklare catalogued specific
by which American JewrY
might disappear, and warned that
the rate of acculturation by Jews
has proceeded much more rapidly
among. Jews than among any other
group in the United States.
Yiddish. he said, was dropped
more rapidly by Jews than any
mother tongue by other groups. The
high rate of intermarriage, he as-
serted, was a major threat. and
the most that could be hoped for
was to contain it at the present
level. However, he added, as yet
Jews are doing little in this area.
He called "biological suicide"
the greatest and least-discussed
threat to Jewish survival, adding
that almost all American Jews be-
lieved in the small family but
"nobody talks about it."
"There is a conspiracy of si-
lence," he maintained, "because we
are all engaged in it except a very
small segment of the Orthodox
community." He called the syna-
gogue one of the main hopes for
Jewish survival, but in a different
form than the traditional syna-
gogue.
