Together with the introduction
of the facsimiles, Rabbi Kolatch
explains the use of commentaries
accompanying the Talmudic texts.
In addition to evaluating the trac-
tates, there is a section explaining
popular terms and expressions in
the Talmud.
Then comes the who's who —
the list of great personalities in
the Talmud.
Dr. Samuel K. Mirsky, professor
of Talmud and rabbinics at Yeshiva
University Graduate School, in an
introduction to this book, com-
mends the author for his creative
effort.
Dr. Kolatch, who is president of
Jonathan David Publishers, has
rendered a genuine service to Jew-
ish scholarship with this work and
has helped provide a volume of
great merit introducing the lay
reader to the makers of the Tal
mud.

Man Honors the Place

From the Talmud
Once . Rab Nahman bar Isaac

.

seated himself among the young
students, another rabbi went over
to him and said: "Will you not be
good enough to take a place more
toward the front, where I am seat-
ed " '
Rab Nahman bar Isaac replied:
"The place does not honor the
man, but the man honors the
place. When the Shekinah was on
Mount Sinai no one was allowed
to approach the Mount. but when
the Shekinah departed, everyone
was allowed to ascend it."
