on Lavon in Stormy
Parliament Meeting
TEL AVIV (JTA)—Former Pre-
mier David Ben-Gurion electrified
a meeting of the Mapai Party secre-
tariat by insisting that the party
reject the plan for alignment with
Ahdut Avoda. endorse formation
of a committee to investigate the
Pinhas Lavon affair anew, and ar-
gued sharply with Deputy Premier
Abba Eban and ex-Prime Minister
Moshe Sharett.
When Ben-Gurion told the ses-
sion that a fresh probe be initiated
to trace Lavon's alleged responsi-
bility for a "security mishap" which
brought about Lavon's dismissal
from the post of defense minister
in 1955, members of Mapai in the.
audience objected.
Sharett objected to personal
slurs against L a v o n. But Ben-
Gurion persisted. He attacked also
Lavon for the action taken by the
Min Hayesod movement to separate
itself from Mapai. He demanded to
know \why Eban had changed his
mind about the issue of holding
regional. instead of national, elec-
tions in Israel. When he told the
meeting that. in the Lavon case. he
seeks "justice and truth," Prime
Minister Levi Eshkol replied "you
are not the only one seeking justice
and truth:*

Surgical Nurses Strike
in 2 Israeli Hospitals;
Postal Walkout Over
TEL AVIV (.ITA) — Surgical
nurses in the Beilinson and Meir
hospitals of the Kupat Holim His-
tadrut sick fund extended what
had started out as a one-day strike
Monday and remained off duty in
efforts to seek higher salaries than
those agreed upon by the Nurses
Union. The nurses, however. re-
mained near their operating
room posts in order to be avail-
able for any urgent operations. .
AlSo out on strike were the
members of the Kol Israel "pops"
orchestra whose members are only
part-time employes of the radio
network.
The Jerusalem post office was
back in operation Monday after
telephone and telegraph communi-
cations workers returned to work
last weekend. The stoppage had
halted all telephone and telegraph
communications between Jerusa-
lem and other parts of Israel and
abroad. The workers were prom-
ised a speedy review of their sal-
ary levels.
A strike of Israeli milkmen was
narrowly averted when a settle-
ment was reached with the work-
ers who had threatened to walk
off their jobs. in the dairy indus-
try.
Dr. Pos Dies ; Served
as Governor of Surinam
PARAMARIBO, Surinam (JTA ,
—Dr. Raymond - Henry Pos, am-
bassador of the Netherlands to
both Cuba and Haiti. died last
weekend in Willemstad, Curacao,
at the age of 54.
Dr. Pos. who was a former gov-
ernor of Surinam. was brought to
Paraninbo, his birthplace, for
burial in the Jewish cemetery
here. Representatives of Queen
Juliana, Pr i n c e Bernard, the
Netherlands Cabinet and the gov-
ernments of Antilles and Surinam.
attended the funeral rites and laid
wreaths at the grave.
Prime Minister Josef Pengel of
Surinam. paid tribute to the late
envoy.
Nahum Feldman Is Dead;
Russ Resistance Fighter
LONDON (JTA)—The death in
Minsk of Nahum Feldman, who
became a noted partisan leader
during the German occupation of
the Russian city, was reported
here from Moscow.
Feldman was in the Minsk
ghetto for a short time and helped
to organize the underground there.
He then escaped and joined the
partisans. Ailing for the last few
years. he had lived quietly in
Minsk. his native city.

After his election. Vice-President-elect Hubert Humphrey sent a
message to American Red Mogen Dovid for Israel, the supply and
support wing of Mogen David Adorn, the Israel Red Cross Service.
Said the Vice-FTesident: "The need for medical care. particularly in
emergencies. knows no national boundaries. I am glad. therefore, to
see the great efforts being made by the American Red Mogen Dovid
for Israel, - Humphrey visited Mogan Dovid Adorn headquarters dur-
ing- a recent visit to Israel and was photographed beside one of the
service's ambulances. Congressman Emanuel Celler is the national
chairman of American Red Mogen Dovid for Israel whose head-
quarters are at 50 W. 57th St., New York.

Tragedy Strikes Three Families;
Frederic Prao's Bodv Recovered
Tragedy struck three Detroit
families last week when three men
were lost on Lake St. Clair while
on a fishing trip, on Nov. 11.
Soviet Jewish Classicist,
Solomon Lurie, Dead

LONDON—Prof. Solomon Lurie,
the famed Soviet Jewish classicist
and authority on ancient Greece,
died in Lemberg at age 73, it was
reported here Tuesday.
Prof Lurie was the author of
standard works on ancient Greek
mythology and philosophy and a
leading authority on Greco-Judean
contacts in history. He had been on
the faculties of Lemberg Univer-
sity and the University of Lenin-
grad.
The body of Frederic Prag, of
12601 Wildwood. Oak Park, was
found on Nov. 12. He had worn
a life jacket and apparently died
of exposure.
As of this writing. the bodies of
h is two companions. Dr. A. H.
Grossman and Ben Weitzman, have
not yet been found.
Funeral services for Frederic
Prag were held at the Hebrew
Memorial Chapel last Friday after-
noon. Surviving him are his wife.
Barbara: his parents. Mr. and Mrs.
Albert Prag, and two daughters,
-Terri and Shelly.

Honor to Hordes' Memory
The President, the Board of Directors, and
the Council of Representatives of the Jewish
National Fund record with profoundest grief
and a deep sense of bereavement the passing
of William Hordes, one of its foremost and most
beloved leaders, guides and friends, whose life "
work shaped and enriched not only of Israel
through the Redemption of its land, through the
Jewish National Fund. and of its reestablishment
as a State, but through every aspect of its de-
velopment.
His fervor of conviction, the warmth of his
personality. his love for learning, and his dedi-
cation to public service, have earned for him
the affection and esteem of the entire Jewish
community. His leadership and understanding
will be missed by all.
We have sustained a grievous and irrepar-
