This is in contrast to those homiletic Mid- rashim which contained sections whose sequence followed the Bibli- cal text. The two most popularly known Pesiktas are the Pesikta de Rab Kahane which is regarded to have been collected in the seventh century and the Pesikta Rabbati presumed to have been collected in the ninth century. The former contains thirty-nine sections while the latter contains forty eight sec- tions. Practically speaking, the Pesikta type of Midrash represents a collection of homiletical dis- courses related to an occasion such as a holiday or a special Sabbath, rather than a collection of homiletical discourses whose sequence simply follows the order of the texts of the Bible. The statements found in these Mid- rashim, are of course much older than the dates in which the collec- tions were completed, having been culled from the vast sea of Tal- mudic literature.
