British Prime Minister Wilson Slams Anti-Semitism

Israeli, U.S. and Soviet Sports Oddities

The English - language "Soviet
Weekly," printed in England, car-
tied an article by Aaron Vergelis,
editor of the Moscow-based Yid-
dish "Soviet Homeland," which ex-
pounds on the achievements of So-
viet Jews. As usual, no mention
was made of Soviet Jewish sports-
men . . . Former USSR national
800-meter champion Abraham Kri-
vosheyev, who ran against the
United States in Los Angeles in
July, was a member of a 3,200-
meter relay team which established
a Russian national record of 7:17.2.
Krivosheyev handled the leadoff
leg.

Reuven Dafni, director of sports
and physical education for the
Israel Ministry of Education, told
sportswriter Arthur Daley of the
New York Times that a law is now
before the Knesset requiring re-
serve grounds to be set aside in
each new Israeli school for the
constriction some day of swimming
pools. gymnasia and athletic facili-
ties. He said that not a single
Israeli school has a swimming pro-
gram. Yet when Yale coach emeri-

tus Bob Kiphuth was in Israel, he
discovered 28 swimmers whom he
felt had the potential to become
champions.
Dafni said the Israeli Army is
not sports conscious—that it is in-
terested only in those exercises
which toughen. He said the Air
Force is first awakening to the
value of sports competition to de-
velop quick reflexes. "We are still
in the pioneer stages in sports,"
said Dafni. "Up to now we have
had more important things to do."
Dafni further noted that sports
is helping to cut down juvenile
delinquency. He pointed out that
when the country was young the
youth had much to occupy it. Now,
sports is filling the void.
Dafni also mentioned that Beer-
sheba has a Little League—in soc-
cer. Actually, Dafni is opposed to
that sport. "You have 22 men chas-
ing a ball and thousands watch-
ing," he said. "I would rather have
500,000 doing something in sports
rather than one Olympic cham-
pion."
