XLV1, No. 12 Page 4 November 13. 1964 The Johnson-Humphrey Vigilant Role It is good to be an American—on many 5ounts, and thanks in great measure to the ballot box. Last week's election proved many things. It proved the soundness of the American people, it gave warning that George Washing- ton's message to the Hebrew Congregation of Rhode Island that the United States - "gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance" remains one of the guiding principles of this land. The Republican candidate for President was defeated because he accepted the help of a radical right and encouraged the views of bigots. The overwhelming majority of the American people rejected extremism. It was not only the Democratic voter who repudiated that element: we must believe that many among the Republicans, who voted as ad- herents of one of our major political parties, also were opposed to views that are foreign to this country. . There is no doubt that a reconstituted Republican Party will assure the perpetuation of our two-party system. It is an inevitable prospect. It may be a difficult task for the moderates, but they will surely achieve it. The lesson of Nov. 3, 1964, was too strong to be ignored. Yet, there will be a struggle. While the radical right represents a mere fraction of the people of this country. it is an active element, fortified with funds, determined to oppose progress and to propagate racial and religious hatred. It is an element that will continue to advocate dissension in its attempt to turn the clock back in humanity's progress. It is proven by the adoption by an overwhelm- ing California vote of a proposition that nul- lifies that state's Rumford Act which had forbidden discrimination in housing. It is similar to a discriminatory measure that received the large vote of approval in Detroit's September Primary Election. Fortunately, in Maryland, where there were many demonstrations in opposition to civil rights, there was a decisive vote in sup- port of a statewide public accommodations law. It is, indeed, 'good to be an American and to know that the sense of fair play which makes America great survives on an over-all basis. In welcoming the benefits of a status of decency for America, we must also accept the responsibilities that go with aiding in the , battle for freedom for all. The price we con- tinue to pay for our freedoms is eternal vigilance. We must never fall short of the duty of being vigilant against bigotry. We have confidence in the Johnson-Hum- phrey administration. They are the leaders in America's battle for justice for all. May their hands be strengthened in that supreme effort Crimes in Name of Expediency In the name of expediency, Great Britain failed to keep the pledge to the Zionist movement. The term was used by British Cabinet members in their conversations with the late Dr. Stephen S. Wise, at the confer- ences that were called by Great Britain with Arabs and Jews. Of course, the Arabs and the Jews never faced each other: the British held separate meetings with them and then laid down the law: scuttling much of what had been pledged in support of a Jewish National Home in Palestine. (The only time Jews and Arabs met face to face was at the armistice conferences, when the Arabs were the licked and the Jews—then already the Israelis— were being forced step by step to take less and less although they were victors. That's what happened at Rhodes, where the confer- ence mediator Ralph Bunche was able to build up a Nobel Peace Prize record, and at other conferences where Arabs were forced to meet with Jews to adjust their losses.) In the name of expediency, many things had happened in the last two decades. Is it possible that it was in the name of expedi- ency that Jews are kept from the U.S. mili- tary bases in Saudi Arabia where it is dan- gerous to mention the words Jews, Zion, Zionist, Israel? It is undoubtedly expediency that has established a new principle in Germany, where there are no longer any Jews in the Bundeswehr. Jews had an enviable record for career military service, for heroism in battles. for having contributed more than their share towards the German military machine's numerical strength. But there are no Jews at all in the West German army today. It is understandable why Jews them- selves should refuse to serve in such an army. but the fact that there is a tacit agree- ment in support of such a condition is an indication of an approval of a scheme to keep Jews out of the German army. In the name of expediency—is it possible that our own government soon will ban Jews from serving in the Air Force in Libya? It has been admitted that the words "Jew" and "Jewish" have been omitted from Ameri- can broadcasts in Libya so as not to offend the "sensitiveness" of the Libyans. The ad- mission is accompanied by an insistence that prejudice does not exist, that it is a matter of protecting America's "great stakes" in an Arab area. That's expedience. And if in the interest of such tacit concessions our govern- ment will be yielding to pressures and dis- criminations there will still be an element of prejudice to which we will be contributing partners. Indeed, what crimes are being commit- ted in the name of expedience! Lord Russell's Expose of USSR Bias Would that the views of tourists were always correct, that those who visit Russia for a brief few days under supervised Soviet guides were right in their judgment that there is no anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union. Unfortunately, the facts tell an entirely different story, and justice-seeking people everywhere must continue the battle against the Russian discriminations. If it were true that Russia is so free and treats Jews as well as a few tourists have reported to us, there would be no protests against existing conditions even from official Communist groups in many lands, and also from the Soviet periodicals in this country. Most devastating proof of the tragic con- ditions in Russia will be found, in the letter of rebuke sent to Aaron Vergelis,- the editor f the only. Russian Yiddish periodical, Sovi- etishe Heimland, by the eminent British philosopher, Lord Bertrand Russell, who took the Jewish apologist for Communism to task for an attitude that has resulted in his "gross- ly misleading" his readers regarding the cultural status of Russian Jewry. Lord Russell was emphatic about the "meager, grudging and inadequate to the needs" cultural op- portunities for Russia's vigorous intellectual community of some 3,000,000 Jews." Vergelis had failed to publicize Lord Russell's previous letters of protest against USSR prejudices and it is doubtful whether anyone in Russia other than Vergelis and his Communist cohorts will be made aware of the latest expression of indignation. But the fact and truths should at least be known in all free countries so that.. the shallowness- of tourist travelogues should be dispelled. 'Israel Today' Gives Impressive Evaluation of State and Zionism "Israel Today" by Harry Essrig and Abraham Segal, published by the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, is not a bi-lingual book. Yet, the title of the book—"Israel b'Yamenu"—also appears on the cover and the two authors resort to many Hebrew terms—printed in this volume in Hebrew—explaining it in this prefatory note: "The best way to read Hebrew words is in the Hebrew alphabet. For that reason, a great many of the Hebrew words appear in the text of 'Israel Today' in Hebrew letters. For those who have not studied Hebrew, these words are listed at the bottom of the page in English transliteration . . . Since this book is about modern Israel, the Israeli or Sephardic pronunciation is followed." "Israel Today" is a very impressive work. Excellently designed and illustrated by Robert Sugar, containing numerous maps and charts, this large book covers every aspect of Israel life, of the history that preceded the emergency of the Jewish State through Zionism, of the great personalities who figured in the historical data about the Land of Israel. There are about 300 photographs and maps and charts in this work which links the Jewries of Israel and the Diaspora while describing the Holy Land, Israel's special meaning to American Jews, the march of Zionism which led to Israel and the manner in which continents are bridged by Israel. Not only Israel's cities, its government, its people and their economy. and all that is linked with statehood, are under review here. The two authors describe in great detail why Jews needed and wanted a homeland. The honor roll of great personalities introduced at this point emphasizes the historical background that led to the past miming to life. Archaeological findings which have led to the merging of past to the present by the reaffirmation of accumulated Biblical data are described by the chroniclers of the Israeli story. The trek towards the south, the conquest of the Negev, prospecting, the search for water, are part of the impressive story. story. "How Zionism Regained a Land" is a title chapter that emphasizes the role of the Zionist movement in Israel's rebirth. All of the major participants in the movement have a place In this This is an up-to-date book, as indicated by the fact that it deals at length with the current issue involving the existence of Two Israels —of the conflict that faces the land in the emergence, in a period of 15 years, of the Sephardim—the Oriental Jews—as a majority over the Ashkenazim, the Western Europeans. The place of the Arabs in Israel, their status, the efforts of the government to elevate their status, are well delineated here. Then there are descriptions of Israel's youth at work; the kibbutz idea and life in kibbutzim are reviewed; there are charts that enlighten the reader on many aspects of Israel's growth; special consideration is given to the growth of Hebrew as a living tongue, HiStadrut and its functions are described with admiration for the labor movement's achievements. In the chapter "The Ties That Bind Us," the authors review the history of American efforts in behalf of Zionism. They It the great Americans who supported the movement, they describe how Reform Judaism became an ally of the cause, they show how "Zionism and Israel have greatly changed American Jewish life," and they conclude: "Zionism and Israel have helped =die us better Jews, better Americans, better people." Indeed, they describe the religious tendencies, they point to the cultural and scientific programs. to Israel's sports activities, holiday celebrations, "democracy in action"—pointing to the government's basic westerr-democratic tendencies—and to the policies of assuring the welfare of the people. The army is viewed at a "school for citizens," and the difficulties with the war-threatening nations are not overlooked. But hope is expressed for peace. A chapter is devoted to 1srael's role among the nations—as a United Nations participant. The final page—Shalom—ends thus: "The Jewish people has an exciting history, a proud heritage of literature, customs, ideas. Its homeland, Israel, is an exciting place, part of your Jewish heritage." Thus a splendid book for young people evaluates a great idea and incidentally can serve also, as a guide to Israel for peoples of all ages and all faiths.
