What is the Jewish traditional
attitude towards suicide?
Jewish tradition regards suicide
as a most horrible crime. The basis
for its prohibition is traced to the
Scriptures (Genesis 9:5) where it
is written "surely I will require
an account of your life's blood."
The medieval author of the "Chov-
oth Halevavoth" indicates that the
closer the killer is related to the
victim, the more beastly the crime.
Since a man is closer to himself,
suicide would be an extreme case
of murder. So grave do the rabbis
consider a suicide that no eulogy,
no tearing of the garments and no
mourning period is observed for
one who commits - suicide. How-
ever, later authorities were severe
only with cases where there was
no question that the suicide was
committed with a full intent with-
out any suspicion of insanity be-
ing involved.
