Catholic, Je w Bring Ecumenical Spirit to Local Institute
BY CHARLOTTE HYAMS
What divides men — not their.
differences, but the lack of under-
standing of those differences—was
dragged out into the open and ex-
posed Wednesday, by mutual agree-
ment.
Catholic and Jew attending the
annual Judeo-Christian Institute at
Marygrove College were encour-
aged to come right out and ask the
questions that had been bothering
them. •
The result was few ponder-
ous theological riddles, but many
basics that any Bar Mitzvah boy
• might know: Do Jews look for
a messiah? Why do Jews cele-

!with it."'
Another misunderstood verse is
"Thou hast chosen us from among
all the peoples," said Rabbi Syme.
"Does it imply that we are better
than others? No, every group has
its concept of chosenness. Moses
said it to a people he'd literally
dragged out of Egypt. He said it
not as a boast but as a burden they
must carry, a standard of ethical
perfection to point their way . . .
Poignant mental pictures were
evoked and warm emotions kindled
when members of the Detroit Serv-
ice Group of the Jewish Welfare
Federation reported the findings
of their recent mission to Israel
at a meeting Monday at the Jew-
ish Community Center.
The DSG Mission is an annual
event whose purpoge this year was
to investigate the relief and re-
habilitation program support by the
Jewish Welfare Federation and
conducted by the constituent agen-
cies of the United Jewish Appeal
in Paris and Israel.
Members of this year's mission
were Frank A. Bernstein, Fred M.
Ginsberg, Benjamin Gould, Dr. and
Mrs. Hyman S. Mellen, Mr. and
Mrs. Abraham Satovsky and Mr.
and Mrs. Peter G. Shifrin. Miss
Esther R. Prussian, director of the .
Detroit Service Group, was tour
leader.
Satovsky told of the masses of
North African Jews who are pour-
ing into France in unprecedented
numbers. • He told about refugees
who have poured into reception
centers operated by the JDC in
Paris, assisted by the Hebrew Im-
migration Aid Society, HIAS.
Some 200 a day are interviewed,
processed, housed and fed. Most
of them come with only the $70
they are permitted to take out of
their country into exile.
Dr. Mellen, co-chairman of the
mission, presented the assembly
with a report on the status of
medical care in Israel and the
public health implications of
refugee treatment in Paris.
Bright spot on the picture for
Mellen was the Hadassah Hospital
in Israel. "It improves by leaps
and bounds", he told the group,
"and would be an outstanding
medical center in any country."
Dr. Mellen said: "Care of North
African refugees in Paris carries
serious implications from a public
and mental health standpoint.

to $700 in U.S. funds must be paid
under the counter for a room with
no toilet facilities, water or refrig-
eration.
The Mission afforded a first
look at Israel for Ginsberg. "I can't
sit home in comfort any more
now," he said vehemently. "I have
seen the people who need my help.
Their courage in the face of great
odds is tremendously moving.
These people don't just want to sit
back and take. They want to build
a nation and become self-sufficient.
They ,are determined to survive
and be a credit to all of us. I have
always wondered what we as a
people would be like if we had
complete freedom. Now I know
. . . and I am proud to be a jew.
This mission to Israel has truly
given me a mission in life."

Detroit Service Group, reported on

Campaign organization in the trade
and professional divisions.
