World Maccanian Gaines and Other Sports Attract Worldwide Attention

BY JESSE AND ROY SILVER

(Copyright, 1964, JTA, Inc.)

Figure skating is one sport
which requires a small fortune to
pursue properly. There are the
costs of skates, costumes, rental of
arenas for practice, coaching, tra-
vel and a thousand other items. As
a result, many exceptional talents
have been lost here in the United
States. It would be a crime if 15-
year-old Taffy Pergamint of New
York were forced to abandon fig-
ure skating because of a lack of
funds. But such is the case.
Your correspondents know that
keeping her in competition is sim-
ply too much for the Pergamint
family budget. The problem is ac-
centuated because of Taffy's tre-
mendous skill. Karli Schaefer, a
two-time Austrian Olympic figure
skating champion and coach, says:
"You knkow what I think about
Taffy? In my opinion she is the
Most gifted and talented girl in
the United States." Here's hoping
the Pergamint family finds the
wherewithal to keep Taffy on ice.

One of the more intriguing char-
acters of the ;current collegiate
football season is Steve Sabot of
Villanova, Pennsylvania, son of the
man who takes' the official Na-
tional Football League movies.
Steve is a 210-pound-back at Colo-
rado College. He was eighth in the
country in punting last season
and he rushed for 601 yards and
averaged 4.95 yards per carry.

Sabot is an.extrovert with a flair
for self-aggrandizement. When he
arrived at Colorado College he
weighed only 165 pounds and was
a complete unknown. He imme-
diately was placed on the school's
fourth football team. However,
Steve stretched the truth a bit and
