Lt. Col. Herschel Forner Is Named Asst. U.S. Army Attache for Israel

Lt. Col. Herschel Forner has
been honored by being designated
as assistant U. S. Army attache for
Israel with headquarters at the
United States Embassy in the city
of Tel Aviv.
Col. Forner, currently residing
here at 18469 R o s e l a w n, is
staff representative for the Michi-
gan Army Missile Plant Contract
Office, in Sterling Township,
Mich., reporting to the U.S. Army
Mobility Command Headquarters
in Warren, Mich.
Ile will assume his new duties
in Tel Aviv in July. 1966. In the
interim, he will undergo inten-
sive training which is given all
military officers appointed to
such sensitive positions
and
which amounts to the "making
of a diplomat."
An Army attache, in addition
to being a soldier. is a combina-
tion of an ambassador of good
will, an intelligence officer, a
diplomat and a military adviser

Col. Forner enlisted in the Army
in 1942 and saw action in the
Rhineland and Central Europe
campaigns during World War II.
From 1952 to 1955, he was Pro-
curement Officer, U. S. Army Ord-
nance Procurement Center, Mann-
heim, Germany. He was stationed
with the Korea Military Advisory
Group at Seoul, Korea, from July
1960 to September 1961. He has
also had many assignments in this
country.

Washington with his wife and fam-
ily in April of 1965. Meanwhile, he

familiarize himself with the He-
brew language and the history',
geography. politics, science, eco-
nomics and military phases of
Israel. Much of this information
he will gain from a study of select-
ed books recommended by the
Army. He and his wife have been
taking a course in Hebrew at the
Jewish Community Center.
From April until August 1965.
he will attend the Defense Intelli-
gence School in Washington, and
from August, 1965 to July, 1966 he
will attend the Defense Language
Institute studying the Hebrew lan-
guage. His estimated arrival in
Tel Aviv is July, 1966. The assign-
ment will be for two years with
option of requesting a third year.
Accompanying Col. Forner to
Washington and then to his new
post in Tel Aviv will be his wife,
Betty, and their three children:
Stephen. 14, Nancy, 10, and Mi-
chelle 3. Nancy was born in Ger-
many while Col. Forner was sta-
tioned there.
Mrs. Forner will attend cer-
tain phases of instruction at the
Defense Intelligence school to
acquaint her with the various re-
sponsibilities of the wife of a
diplomat.
