`Oliver!' Is Coming to Fisher Nov. 23

Lionel Bart's "Oliver!", the mu-
sical event of the season direct
from two capacity years on Broad-
way and currently in its fourth
year in London, will be presented
by David Merrick at the Fisher
Theater for one week beginning
Monday evening, Nov. 23.
This original New York produc-
tion stars Judy Bruce of the Lon-
don and New York companies,
Robin Ramsay, Danny Sewell. Alan
Crofoot, Helena Carroll. David
Jones and little Ronnie Kroll as
Oliver. This is a free-and-happy
adaption of Charles Dickens' im-
mortal "Oliver Twist," emphasiz-
ing the humorous and touching
fleetingly on the tragic. Young Mr.
Bart is accredited with the book,
music and lyrics of this first
musicalized version of any of
Dickens' famous novels. Others
have been dramatized, TV*d and
screened, but none have been
given a song-and-dance treatment,
unless there are some dim records
beyond our reach.
The orphanage scene with
Oliver plaintively wanting some
more porridge is highlighted by
the gay, "Food, Glorious Food"
number. the romance between the
Beadle and the Widow has "I Shall
Scream!", the undertaker bit is
enlivened with 'That's Your Fun-
eral!", Fagin and his Little Fol-
lowers "You've Got to Pick a
Pocket or Two," the Artful Dod-
ger's `Consider Yourself" and
Nancy has the hauntingly beautiful
'As Long As He Needs Me."
Directed by Peter Coe, "Oliver!"
