He Serves His Country and His Fellow Man
At age 74, Joseph Shapiro hasn't
lost his voice in speaking on behalf
of the Jewish war veteran.
That voice still bears the Bri-

although he's been in the United
States since age 22..

Editor, The Jewish News:
The writer wonders as to how
many Americans know about the
plight of some of the old aged in
our glorious country. who ace com-
pelled to live in poverty and in
lonelineSs.
Although I will soon reach my
89th birthday, nevertheless I am
living in comfort and content with
my income. However, not all old
people are thus fortunate.
I am not a politician, and I re-
peat again that I am not asking
for myself. but, I know this much:
that one half of the millions of
old-aged receive less than $1,000
yearly.

would benefit by granting an
increase to help those old men
over 65 to live a little better
than now. Old people. as a rule,
do not hoard money, but spend,
and the butcher, the grocer, the
rooming house operator. all
would benefit. Even the govern-
ment would receive more in in-
come tax from those who sell
to the oldsters.
In a land where politicians in
the state and in Washington live
in luxury, they close their eyes to
the disgraceful plight of those old-
sters, who also helped build this
country when they were young.
