Conyers Supports Johnson Programs 'Judge Charles Kaufman

"Congressman John Dingell was
my mentor, I worked closely with
Michigan members of Congress
when I was on John's staff. and
I am well informed on major
issues." John Conyers Jr.. candi-
date for Congress in the First
District, stated this week.

In a message to The Jewish
News, Conyers, who is running in
one of the heaviest Democratic
districts in the state, said he favors
liberalized immigration laws and
all-out aid for Israel, that he op-
poses making any concessions to
Nassar and that he will do his ut-
most to uphold President Johnson
in his program for the elimination
of poverty and for the establish-
ment of best foreign relations.
Conyers, a Wayne State Uni-
versity law graduate, has the dis-
tinction of having been elected
treasurer of Detroit chapter of
Tau Epsilon Rho. He states that
while at Wayne State Law School.
his closest associates were the
Jewish fraternity members who
welcomed him and who were
among—the first to scrap racial
barriers for membership.

Common Pleas Court Judge
Charles Kaufman is a candidate for
election to the Wayne County Cir-
cuit Court. He has held his current
judgeship five years.
Kaufman has lived in Wayne
County all his life, except for serv-
ice as an officer in the Air Force
during World War II, when he re-
ceived the Distinguished Flying
Cross, Air Medal and Purple Heart.
He spent the last 18 months of
the war in a Japanese prison camp.
After returning from service, he
studied law, graduating from
Wayne State University Law
School.
He was appointed to the com-
mon pleas bench to fill a vacancy
and later was elected to the post.

Devi Campaign Trail

Jack Faxon. successful candidate
for the Democratic nomination for
state representative from the 5th.
Legislative District, is still hitting
the campaign trail. During the
past weeks he has appeared before
numerous groups in the Northwest
area stressing the need for a strong
Democratic vote this November.
On Monday he was guest speaker
at the annual men's club banquet '
at Ahavas Achim.
On Tuesday he spoke to several
groups at various home in North-
west Detroit, including one at the
home of his cousin, Mrs. Morris
Pleason, 18249 Lauder, and at
meetings of Pioneer Women and
a Golden Age Group of Workmen's
Circle. At the latter he spoke
partly in Yiddish.
