Yaakov Morris Due to Tackle Issues
Facing 26th World Zionist Congress
Issues and challenges confront-
ing the 26th World Zionist Con-
gress, scheduled to meet, shortly
in Jerusalem, will be discussed by
Yaakov Morris of the Jewish
chairman- of the Zionist Council of
Detroit, under whose auspices the
meeting will be held, will preside.
Aviva Weiss and Baruch Fishhoff
of the Hashomer Hatzair Zionist
youth organization will perform.
The first Zionist Congress con-
vened by Theodor Herzl in Basle,
Switzerland, in 1897, adopted the
so-called "Basle Program." It stated
that Zionism aims at establishing
for the Jewish people a publicly
and legally assured home in Pales-
tine. It also centered much of its
attention upon organizing a world
Zionist movement in order to
create the political machinery ne-
cessary to achieving the then-
daring goal of establishing an inde-
pendent Jewish state.
The 26th Congress is faced with
further developing a dynamic inter-
relationship between the Jewish
state and the world Jewish com-
munity in which there are power-

TEL AVIV — Thirty volunteers
recently combed the terrain of
Israel's Negev Desert taking a!
gazelle census.
The Society for the Preservation
of Nature initiated the count when
it was reported that gazelles in
the Negev were dying out. The
study was undertaken with an
eventual aim of multiplying the
gazelle population of the area by
at least 30.
With the help of Pioneering
Youth (Gadna) units of the Israeli
Army, the volunteers scanned the
desert with binoculars daily and
marked locations on a map. Exact
time of sighting and location, as
well as composition of the herd
were noted to avoid duplication.
The largest herds were found in
areas where huge acacias grew in

Mr. and Mrs. Gus Zendell of Sen-
ica Ave, Oak Park, announce the
engagement of their daughter Car-
la to Edward H. Krass, the son
of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Krass of
Appoline Ave.
The bride-elect attends Wayne
State University, where she is ma-
joining in education. Her fiance
graduated from Wayne State Uni-
versity College of Education.
An Aug. 15 wedding is planned.
Herds were composed of three
animals, one male, one female, and
one young gazelle. This led the
Society to the conclusion that there
will be a possibility of a 50 per
cent increase each season.

Barry Goldwater's candidacy for
president of the United States. He
spoke in his private capacity as
rabbi; not as American Jewish
Congrets president. An article in
the Oct. 16 issue of The Jewish
News criticized Dr. Prinz as presi-
dent of the American Jewish Con-
gress.
The American Jewish Congress
is a nonpartisan 'organization, and,
as such, neither supports nor op-
poses candidates for political offic e .
Dr.‘ Prinz's statement has been

greis has indeed opposed Sen.
GoldWater's candidacy.

Dr. Alex Friedlaender, chairman of the Balfour Concert of the
Zionist Organization of Detroit, reported at the sponsors' formal
supper party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Irving Feldman, in South-
field, on Oct. 21, that another sell-out is expected at the annual
event, at Ford Auditorium, this Saturday night. The remaining small
number of unsold seats will go on sale at the box office at 7 p.m.
At the supper party, Judge Ira G. Kaufman, ZOD president, told of
the growing interest in the Zionist movement and in the annual fund-
raising event. During the evening. Serge Fournier (left) the director
of the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, which will be featured at the concert
with Roberta Peters as soloist, told of plans to include the "Nora"
as part of the program. The noted pianist, David Pope, gave a recital
at the party. Others in the photo (from left) are the hosts, Mr. and
Mrs. Irving Feldman; Dr. and Mrs. Friedlaender; Rabbi Moses Lehrman,
president of the Michigan Zionist Region; and Pope.
