The term "Diaspora" is a Greek
expression meaning "dispersion."
It is claimed that the Jews of the
Hellenistic period used this term
to refer to the Jews who were
located outside of the land of Is-
rael, having been dispersed there
by foreign nations since the fall of
the first Commonwealth. The Sept-
uaginta translates a word in the
Bible, usually taken to mean "ter-
ror" or "oppression" with the
word "Diasport" (Za-avah). This
is the statement in the Bible which
says: "Thou shalt be a horror (or
d i a s p or a, meaning dispersed)
amongst all the kingdom of the
earth" (Deuteronomy 28:25). It
might indicate that the people of
Israel were oppressed and terrified
in their state of dispersion. The He-
brew word "Galuth" (exile) came
to be used to represent dispersion.
Some, however, like to distinguish
between Galuth as a forced exile
while Diaspora may in some cases
be even a voluntary state of exist-
ence outside of Israel.
