Dr. Joseph Lifschitz Dies;
Was Jewish Bund Leader

NEW YORK (JTA)—Dr. Joseph
Lifschitz, author and leader of the
Jewish Socialist movement, died
here last weekend at age 70. He
was active in the New York com-
mittee of the Jewish Labor Bund.
Born in Poland, Dr. Lifschitz for
many years headed the Polish
youth organization of the Jewish
Labor Bund. In 1939 he was ar-
rested for his activities by the
Soviet Union and sent to a Si-
berian work camp.
He was freed when Germany in-
vaded the Soviet Union, joined
the Polish Army of the Middle
East and came to the United
States in 1948.
