Deicide Rejected by Episcopalians; 4th Catholic Council in View on Jewish Iss= es ST. LOUIS (JTA)—The House of Bishops of the Protestant Episcopal Church declared here Oct. 13 that the charge of deicide against Jews was wrong, and that anti-Semitism was a "direct contradiction of Christian doctrine." The statement by the 150 bishops was considered the strongest on the subject ever issued by a major Protestant body in this country. The statement said the deicide charge involved a "tragic misun- derstanding of the inner signific- ance of the crucifixion." While it is a fact that "Jesus was crucified by some Roman soldiers at the instigation of some Jews," the statement asserted, this "cannot be construed as imputing corporate guilt to every Jew in Jesus' day, much less the Jewish people in subsequent generations. Simple justice alone proclaims the charge of a corporate and inherited cure on the Jewish people to be false." In denouncing anti-Semitism as un-Christian, the bishops declared that Jesus was a Jew 'and' since the Christian church is rooted in Israel, spiritually we are Semites." Christian-motivated anti-Semitism. Conservative prelates have sought to water down that and other stands clearly favored by a major- ity of the prelates. it. The issue was linked with the determination of the progressive Council fathers to obtain a defini- tive declaration absolving Jews, past and present, of the ancient charge of deicide in the crucifixion of Jesus, and a condemnation of DINETTES BY ALANCO Exclusive styles with distinction, beauty and quality. Cardinal Doepfner also said that he could say nothing at the present time about the placement of the declaration on Jews among the Council documents. This was un- derstood to mean that he did not exclude the possibility it would be inserted in the "De Ecclesia" schema.
