NOW THAT THE baseball sea-
son is over and the St. Louis Cards
are World Champs, Its time for
concentration on the fall spectac-
ulars of football .. As far as we're
concerned, pro ball is just about
the ultimate ... But for a rounded-
; out day, believe us, there is noth-
ing quite like college football .
You hop in the car and drive for a
few hours to complete what is
! normally an hour's drive . . . Then
you walk a couple of miles to pack
yourselves in with 100,000 other

people while men play at boys'
games .
. Your seat is a hard
narrow bench with - the generous
measurements of about 12x15
inches . You either broil in the
sun, with too much clothing on,
or you freeze with not enough ...
You abuse your digestion with cold
hot dogs and insipid pop and then
you have the long drive home to
look forward to . . . It's all very
jolly . . . There are, however, cer-
tain members of the cognescenti
who have licked all the problems
. Here is what they are going to
do . . . They leave home in plenty
of time to arrive at. say, the U. M.
Stadium, at least two hours ahead
of the crowd ... They park on the
golf course across from the stad-
ium and out come the picnic
lunches . .. No soggy peanut but-
ter sandwiches, no flat and unin-
spired bologna sandwiches for
these canny folk ... Instead, their
sandwiches are very likely to con-
sist of chopped chicken liver on
pumpernickel bread accompanied
by the right amount of Bermuda
onion and followed by a chilled
bottle of champagne. sirloin. raw
egg, mustard and onion and other
secret ingredients served on a ses-
ame seed bun with a bottle of bur-
gundy or Bordeaux wine . . For
a final note of elegance, be sure
you have linen napkins and some
decent stem ware ... This is serv-
ed from the back of a station wag-
on or convertible and the dining
is alfresco of course . . . After
the game, return to the car for
several relaxing rounds of martinis
or manhattans while the traffic
clears . . . This is picnicking in
the grand manner . . . If in Ann
Arbor, it is a short hop for dinner
to Weber's Supper Club, the Farm
Cupboard or any of Detroit's fine
restaurants . . If your tickets
were to see the Spartans play in
East Lansing, there are at least
three good restaurants in Lansing
. . . Archy's is famed for lobster
and steaks . . . In the Jack Tar
Hotel is the Fielder Room, where
roast prime ribs is the favorite
. Over at the Dome Room in the
Roosevelt Hotel they have a huge
charcoal grill which produces
what many consider the finest
steaks in Michigan . . . If thread-
ing your way through traffic at
the wheel of a high-powered motor
car with the coolness of a Fangio
or an Ascari is your forte, then by
all means visit Win Schuler's marv-
elous restaurant in Marshall . . .
This place is regarded by many as
one of the finest restaurants in the
country and it is well worth the
trouble of going out of your way
to dine there.
CHARLIE DUBIN opens Oct.
26 in the Red Velvet Room of Leo
Adler's beautiful Flagpole Cock-
tail Lounge and Restaurant on
Livernois . . He leaves a long
successful sint at Darby's Sky-
light Room to bring his extremely
popular ivory ticklings to the Liv-
ernois smart spot which is ,easily
destined to become a northwest
topper as the place to go for the
smart set.
