NEW YORK (JTA)—The Jew-
ish Telegraphic Agency opened its
first leased cable circuit Oct. 14,
directly linking its New York and
London offices. The new circuit, a
direct, office-to-office link like the
radioprinter hookup it replaces,
will provide speedier and more de-
pendable facilities for transmission
of JTA news to London, for redis-
tribution there on the European
oontinent and in Australia.
The new cable circuit represents
the first stage in conversion of
JTA's North Atlantic facilities
from radioprinter to cable. Under
arrangements negotiated by Victor
M. Bienstock, JTA general man-
ager, with Press Wireless, Inc.,
and the British Post Office, all
JTA's New York-London Press
communications will be shifted
from radio to cable. The conver-
sion is expected to be completed
before the end of 1964.
A major advantage of cable
over radioprinter is that the
cable is rarely subject to the
atmospheric disturbance that fre-
quently disrupt radio communic-
ations, especially during the aut-
umn and winter months. The
North Atlantic radio path is ex-
ceptionally vulnerable to these
disturbances.
JTA will continue to use radio-
printer facilities for direct com-
munication with Israel, South
Africa and South America. JTA
and its affiliated Israeli News
Agency have their own receiving
station in Tel Aviv.

its approaching 50th anniversary.
Speaking from the Knesset po-
dium, as 140 members of the
United Jewish Appeal study mis-
sion currently visiting Israel occu-
pied seats in the House as guests
of honor, Luz extended "our salute
and good wishes to the American
JDC on the occasion of its 50th
anniversary."
Reviewing JDC's history, Luz
noted that the organization's
work of "aid to shattered Jew-
ish communities and the rehabi-
litation of refugees" has served
"as a splendid example of the
principle of Jewish solidarity
and mutual responsibility." He
noted that, in its work in the
last half-century, the JDC spent
$800,000,000.
"Your work," he said, address-
ing the UJA mission, "is not yet
completed. So long as there are
Jewish dispersions and so long
as there are acts of hostility and
hatred against Jews of frequent
by increasing the debts of the
Jewish Agency and the Govern-
ment."
Earlier, Louis Pincus, treasurer
of the Jewish Agency, told the
mission that American Jews are
not carrying their fair share of
the burden of bringing Jewish im-
migrants to this country, settling
them and absorbing them.
Immigrants are now entering
Israel at a record rate, he said.
"Not since 1951;" he declared,
"has there been such a large im-
migration as we have seen in the
last four years." He stated that,
according to indications. the in-
flow of newcomers in 1965 will
to each dollar received in contribu-
tions from the Jews abroad.
While economic progress in the
United States has been remark-
able, and the American Jewish
community has shared in their
country's affluence, "the contribu-
tions of the UJA have remained at
a plateau." "In view of the tre-
mendous burden the Israelis must
bear for defense, education and
development," he maintained ,"this
is historically unfair."
Deputy Defense Minister Shi-
mon Peres briefed the UJA lead-
ers on Israel's security problems
and the burden of security ex-
penditures on Israeli taxpayers.
Board of Deputies of British Jews
and other Jewish organizations in
this country was issued here by
Solly Teff as this leader was elect-
ed unanimously as president of the
board.
He told the meeting at which he
was chosen that he believes "that
such consultation and cooperation
is possible and can be of construc-
tive value without in any way im-
pairing the standing and authority
or, indeed, maintaining the char-
acter of the board as representa-
tive of Anglo-Jewry."

Israel's economic burdens in the
face of rising immigration were
stressed earlier by Finance Minis-
ter Pinhas Sapir, who said there
was a limit to what can be imposed
on Israeli citizens—just as there
is a limit to the debts the Jewish
Agency and the Israel Govern-
ment can shoulder.
Sapir warned that if American
Jewry fails to give Israel the need-
ed support for absorbing immi-
gration, the country's basic econo-
mic progress may be considerably
slowed down. "We have reached
the stage," he declared, "where
an increasing share of absorption
costs fall upon the Israeli tax-
payer, while the participation of
Jews outside Israel was decreas-
ing."
He urged a greater flow of
gift dollars to correct this dan-
gerous situation, noting that
present support is far from suf-
ficient and "we have been able
