Serge Fournier, newly appointed
conductor and music director of
the Toledo Orchestra, already en-
joys an enviable reputation as the
result of a varied and exciting
career both here and abroad, high-
lighted by a term as an assistant
conductor to Leonard Bernstein
and the New York Philharmonic in
1962-63. He will direct his orches-
tra here Oct. 31, at Ford Audi-
torium, at the annual Balfour Con-
cert of the Zionist Organization

Gentlemen's Quarterly
Honors Ben Levinson

The image of Detroit as the
automobile capital of the world is
acquiring a new facade as it under-
goes a vast urban and cultural
redevelopment, and segments of
this dramatic story are told in the
November issue of Gentlemen's
Quarterly, a fashion magazine for
men-
High points of the current De-
troit story are told by way of pho-
graphs and brief sketches of some
of Detroit's top personalities, se-
lected for their civic endeavors
and the impact on the fashion
habits of the community.
The front cover of the magazine
features Henry Ford II. Then,
there's Mayor Jerome P. Cavanagh.
Briefly recounted is the public
service of Benjamin Levinson,
son, president of . the Franklin
Mortgage CorporatiOn, which serv-
ices some $110 million in govern-
ment insured and guaranteed mort-
gages, and represents in Detroit
such institutions as the Chase
Manhattan Bank, and the Occi-
dental Life Insurance Co. of Cali-
fornia.
.For many years, Levinson has
aided- institutions of higher learn-
ing. Walls of his office are filled
with plaques and certificates rec-
ognizing these contributions to
the University of Detroit, Wayne
State University, Yeshiva Uni-
University, Maryglade College, a
Catholic Seminary, and Wilber-
force University, one of the coun-
try's oldest Negro universities.
At a recent dinner in New York,
he was presented a plaque from
"Gentlemen's Quarterly" honoring
him as a "Fashion Personality in
the City of Detroit."
One of the facets of the Detroit
Story in Gentleman's Quarterly
is represented by Joseph Z. Neder-
lander , president of the Neder-
1 a n d e r Theatrical Corporation,
which operates the "reborn" Fish-
er Theater.
The personality sketches of Lev-
inson and Nederlander portray the
sartorial habits of the two —
Levinson having his clothes tailor-
ed by Karl Gutman and Nederlan-
der wearing ready-made Saks and
Scholnick suits.
Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Levin-
son will be hosts to Sen. Philip
A. Hart at a reception at the
Sheraton Cadillac Hotel, next
Thursday, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The Levinsons have played im-
portant roles in Democratic circles
during the past 25 years.

Orchestra were featured at the
formal reception for sponsors of
the Balfour Concert to be held at
Ford Auditorium on Oct. 31.
The reception, held Wednesday
night at the home of Mr. and Mrs.

Southfield, heard leaders of the
Zionist Organization of Detroit,

LETTER BOX

`Serve Education Needs
in Detroit, Then Abroad'

Editor, The Jewish News:
On the front page of The Jewish
News of Oct. 2 is a news item
about the UJA adopting a program
to raise $127,000,000 over and
above their regular drive, for an
Israeli education fund; and in your
editorial of the same issue you
lament the fact that a basic cause
of assimilation is the lack of sup-
port for Jewish- education in Am-
erica.
Which is to be more favored—
which is to have our hearty coop-
eration at this time? The action of
the leaders of the UJA indicates
that the time is now for Zion. But
one may- turn to the wisdom of the
Torah and read that a Jew must
help his neighbor before he helps
a stranger, the poor of his own
city before the poor of another
city or country.
MILTON S. MARWIL

A standing ovation was given
David Pope, professor of music
at Bowling Greeen (0;) State
University, who gave a 40-rain-
ute piano recital. Serge Four-
nier, conductor of the Toledo
Symphony Orchestra, who will

and Don Barnett, manager of the
Toledo orchestra, acclaimed
Pope as one of America's most
promising young pianists.

president, presided at the program
at the reception that preceded a
supper hosted by the Feldmans. A
report on the progress for the
concert was given by Dr. Alex
Friedlaender, chairman of the

Lehrman, president of the Michi
gan Zionist Region, and Fournier
