Jewish prayers or songs.
The O
titude of a Jewish chap-
lain w
mode occasional visit to
the base was described by the Cap-
tain as "d
o n't rock the boat."
"We have just decided to discon-
tinue our Sunday School for fear
that our children are learning too
much. I attribute our safety to two
factors—our hidden Jewish ident-
ity and blind luck .. .it is a miser-
able, nerve-wracking existence."

"When the late President Kenne-
dy said: 'Ask what you can do for
your country,' I feel that he did '
not expect us to sacrifice our re-
ligion or self-respect. If Jewish
personnel must be forced upon the
Arabs, why not let it be unmarried
men who would reside in barracks
on base—not families who must
live in the Arab community."
The Captain went on to de-
scribe how the Air Force radio
and TV stations at Wheelus cen-
sor all references to the Jewish
religion or to Israel. "On a re-
cent story of the life of Albert
Einstein, all references to his
Jewishness were censored before
its showing. On another occasion
the words 'Bar Mitzvah' were
censored. Recently an uproar
was caused while a presentation
of 'The Eternal Light' was inad-
vertently put on the air."
A prevailing attitude of Air
F or c e officers responsible for
Wheelus is to discourage Jewish
personnel from identifying them-
selves as such or teaching religion
or customs in any way that might
offend the Arabs. The captain
feels the pressure has had its im-
pact.
"If you doubt what I'have writ-
ten, check and see how many Jew-
ish military personnel have erased
their religion from their records,

.

dog tags, census cards, etc. I can
make you a list. See how many are
afraid to light candles. Find out
how many, who never did before,
ignore all Jewish holidays." This
was the Captain's plea to the Sen-
ator.
This letter was confirmed by
another from an Airman First
Class stationed at the same base.
He said that Jewish families
were encouraged to masquerade
as "Protestant or anything else
but a Jew."
The veteran Airman said: "I
have two children, four and five
years old, and it is eating me up
that I can't teach them the Jew-
ish way of life."
"You can't believe how it feels
to live in fear until you are actual-
ly doing it. We have to hide every-
It's ike being in Nazi Germany.
Our own government goes as far
as censoring anything on our own
(Wheelus Base) TV and radio that
pertains to Jewish or Hebrew . . .
During one Ed Sullivan show, the
Jewish comedian Jackie Mason was
cut so bad, it would have been bet-
ter to cut the whole segment," said
the Airman.
He tad of an incident involving
the award at the Base to Girl
Scouts of a pin that the Arabs
thought resembled the Star of Da
vid. The little girls "were jeered
and spat upon" when they proudly
wore their little badges on Libyan
streets.
The pins were taken away from
the chpdren and certificates given,
instead.
"You can't tell a child Sunday at
11 a.m. that they are Jewish and at
1 p.m. to forget it. The older ones
were singing the (Hebrew) songs )
off base. We all live off base be-1
cause none of us are of the rank
to qualify for base housing."

When the Airman's parents
sought to fly to Libya to care for
the children in an emergency,
U. S. State Department officials
insisted that the Jewish parents
list themselves as Protestant on
the Libyan visa application. His
wife was hospitalized and there
was nothing this Brooklyn Jew-
ish family could do but become
the "Marranos" of 1964.
The Airman sadly concluded
that "I, my family, and the other
Jewish military here are giving
up the basic freedom we are
guarding."

At Air Force headquarters in
Washington, strategic considera-
tions involving the future of the
Wheelus base were deemed such
that the feelings of a proud hand-
ful of Jewish fliers must be ig-
nored.
Col. Frederick H. Fahringer, of
the Air Base, stated the official
position in a letter to Sen. Javits.
He said that "in Air Force opera-
tions abroad, the Air Force is con-
tinually made aware that it is a!
guest of the host country whose
customs, religion and political in-
stitutions it must respect, even
when they differ sharply from our
own. It is believed that the Air
Force is doing this in Libya, as
well as serving the United States
goals of continuing Libya's present
pro-Western orientation and re-
taining the use of the extremely
important military installation at
Wheelus Air Base, by following a
policy of restricting broadcasting
on subjects embarrassing or of-
fensive to its Libyian host.".
Sen. Javits has served notice
that he will pursue a penetrating
inquiry into this issue.
