Mapam Leader Chazan Visits Here,
Tells of Party's Israeli Program and
Its A: in. to End Land Speculations

One of Israel's most distin-
guish,d iea..ers. Jacob Chazan, a
member of Lhe Knesset represent- ,
ing Mapam .,n i one of the pioneers
in Israel's activities, was a guest
in D. tro•t and in Windsor for a
few days last week. He was hosted
by Aoraham Berniker, Windsor
Jewish leader.
Chazan. a member of the Mapam ,
Central Committee and of the ex-
ecutive of Kibbutz Artzi, came to
this country for a short stay, with
Mrs. Chazan. Both spoke with pride
of their life in Mizhmar Ha-Emek,
where Chazan has resided for 32
years. He has been prominent at a
number of World Zionist Con-
gresses, is a member of Vaad
Hapoel of Histadrut and of the
world executive of Keren Kaye-
meth 'Jewish National Fund).
The Chazans' three . daughters
and three grandchildren also are
members of Kibbutz Mishmar Ha-
Ernek.

During his New York visit,
Chazan discussed Israel's current
problems and needs and em-

He said one of the great tasks
of Israel today is to accomplish
the fusion between oriental and
occidental Jewries, and to do that
he strongly supported the aim of
establishing high schools in Israel
to provide secondary education for
those who now have no access to
studies beyond the primary grades.

He said Mapam strives to revive
halutzism—the pioneering spirit in
Israel—to elevate the standards of
the oriental elements, to create
better economic opportunities for
the impoverished.

Chazan said his party espe-
cially strives to end land specula-
tions and to- prevent the sale
of government property to pri-
vate groups or individuals.

A small group became million-
aires overnight as a result of the
speculations, Chazan charged.
He said there is need, con-
stantantly propagated by Mapam,
to continue to strive for peace
with the Arab nations. One of the
steps in that direction, he said.
is equality for all Arabs in Israel.
