NY Tinies Critic
Hails 'Fiddler' as
`Beautiful' Play

The dean of New York critics,
Brooks Atkinson. has labeled "Fid-
dler on the Roof." Broadway musi-
cal that premiered in Detroit,

"intimate, funny and touching and
a major artistic achievement."
Based on Sholem Aleichem's
work, "Tevye's ' Daughters," the
play is in Atkinson's words, "ex-
traordinarily beautiful" even

though 'the characters wear shabby
clothes and their environment is
unlovely." .
The New York Times "critic at
large" was lavish in his praise of
the play that carries off Sholem
Aleichem's . -double-visioned hu-
mor — a balance between inno-
cence and worldliness."
"Since Sholem Aleichem died in
poverty." Atkinson concluded, "he
would probably have relished the
irony of being the source of a
Broadway musical comedy that cost
S375.000 to produce and began
with an advance sale of $650,000.
When he was dying he said. 'Let
me be buried among the poor, that
their :;raves may shine on mine
and mine on theirs.' Now a lot of
strangers are going to make huge
sums of money out of his artful
simplicity."
