10 YEARS AGO, when Iry and lovers, this was the business they
Saralee Lober opened their barbe- decided to go into . . . Saralee's
cue spot in Oak Park, folks thought knowledge of cooking a n d Irv's
they had gone "cook-ey" Only management ability made a suc-

. Iry had become tired of work- a year when a young Negro girl,
ing for someone else and being as sent out by an employment agency,
though he and Saralee were rib told Irv, "If you hire me. you'll
never be sorry." . . . Those words
were never truer ... Today, Ber-
nice Lucas practically runs the
place . . . taking over whenever
needed and certainly worth her
weight in gold, as Iry would say
. . . Recent fire has had Lober's
closed, but it is now reopened to

WHAT DOES AN international
movie star like to eat most? . . .
Well, Mike Dennis of Cafe Gour-
met can supply the answer if the
star is John Pierre Aumont . . .
He goes for Viener Schnitzel a la
Holstein . . . that's a veal cutlet
with an egg sitting on it, girls.
BERMAN'S CHOP HOUSE, 1431
Times Square, is a man's bar —
there is no mistaking that . . .
The walls are paneled in heavy
wood, the chairs and bar stools are
comfortably padded. the steaks and
chops are generous and nowhere
is the woman's touch to be seen
.. . The "crowd" at Berman's is a
collection of bigtime athletes,
newspapermen, visiting celebrites
and a scattering of the ubiquitous
salesmen . . It's a kind of a De-
troit branch of Toots Shor's ... Not
that Sam Davis and Ben. Gottleib,
the proprietors, have any prejudice
against women—the ladies are wel-
come anytime except if they are
all alone after five o'clock . . .
Harry Berman, founder of this fine
retreat from pastels and frills, re-
tired to Florida 16 years ago, but
the place is as popular as ever ...
Through the years, Berman's has
built a national reputation on
steaks and chops, which are about
85 per cent of its business ... The
cottage fried potatoes are parti-
cularly good . . . Among the many
ponts of , interest at Berman's is
the small open kitchen . . . It is a
lesson in efficiency to watch the
seven or so men work . . . They
hardly have room to turn around,
but they get everything done right
in a tightly-controlled ballet.
