Right-Wing Groups Gain Strength

WASHINGTON—A new study
has revealed that right-wing or-
ganizations are thriving—includ-
ing some outright anti-Semitic
groups.
The average income of rightist
organizatiiins tripled between 1958
and 1963. But Gerald L. K. Smith's
anti-Semitic "Christian Nationalist
Crusade" did not do as well. His
income increased from $172,700 in
1958 to $288,700 in •963. Rightist
elements which avoided open anti-
Semitism did much better.
The study was made by Group
Research, of Washington, D.C., an
authoritative organization which
gathers information on conserva-
tive political and economic lob-
bies and organizations.
An- -estimated total of $30,000,-
000 was spent by rightist groups
in 1963. The 30 leading organiza-
tions accounted for $14,300,000 of
this sum. Going back to 1955, the
study found that right-wing or-
ganizations have been growing at
the rate of 17 per cent annually.

The study ranged from out-
and-out bigots, such as Gerald L.
IL Smith and the late Conde
McGinley's "Common Sense," to
racist groups like the Citizens
Council of America and beyond
to non-racist conservatives ad-
vocating extreme • laissez-faire-
economics.
The so-called Christian National-

ribute

ist Crusade is the principal organ-
izational vehicle of long-time anti-
Semite Smith who profits per-
sonally from anti-Semitism. His
magazine, The Cross and Flag,"
is reminiscent of Nazi literature.
The first "principle" of this move-
ment is to "preserve America as
a Christian nation, being conscious
of the fact that there is a highly
organized campaign to substitute
Jewish tradition for Christian
tradition."
Evidence was uncovered that at

ure, are Miss Hope Gray and
Miss Olive Simes. They are not
only endorsers of the John Birch
Society but stockholders in . Robert
Welch, Inc. Smith listed the two
as contributors to his group.
As might be expected, the lead-
ing Smith contributors do not as
a rule show up as important back-
ers of the more respectable right.

least some of Smith's backers also
support the JOhn .,birch -Society.

VI ESHKOL

There are exceptions.. Smith's
major support is broadly based
with five, ten, and twenty dollar
bills coming from many sources.
Yet the Smith records also
show that F. J. Martin, of To-

.

ledo, gave him $7,792 and C.
Cleveland, of Fort Worth, pres-
ented $5,096.
An estimate was made–'
that the

anti-Semitic hate grouir publishing
"Common Sense" earned $160,000
in 1963.
Initiated in 1947, "Common
Sense" is the organ of anti-Semite
Conde McGinley's Christian Edu-
cational Association and has con-
tinued since McGinley's •death last
year.
A typical assertion of "Common
Sense" is that the Jews are "The
Chosen People" who founded
Communism and spread it through-
out the world. The House Com-
mittee on Un-American Activities,
in a 1954' report, characterized
"Common Sense" as carrying
"some of the most vitriolic hate
propaganda ever to come to the
attention of the committee."
