FISHER THEATER will be dark
week of Oct. 19 . . . but Act IV
across the street won't be sleeping
. . . Owners Clarence Baker and
John Dahlinger will bring Mel
"Velvet Fog" Torme and a seven-
piece band, Oct. 19 thru Oct. 25,
into Act IV.
NEW EXPERIMENT being tried
by Crossroads Restaurant is sing-
ing waiters and waitresses ... Four
guys and three gals able to wait
on tables and back up performers
who'll be appearing . . • John
Warey is still on the scene as the
smiling host, m.c. and impressario,
while the kitchen has a new face
in Wendel Dalton, who takes over
! that department with 25 years ex-
perience in the food business.
TRY THE FORBIDDEN CITY
for an interesting evening of din-
mg out . . . The food and drinks
are Polynesian style (also Ameri-
can drinks, of course.) and the
elegant scenery that includes a
waterfall, lends much toward an
inviting atmosphere.
IT'S NOT QUITE certain when
Roma Cafe first opened its doors
to Detroit lovers of Italian food
. . . Back around the turn of the
century, it was a combination
restaurant, grocery store and home,
and even in those days it was
known as the Roma Cafe . . . Dur-
ing Prohibition, the Roma was
equally famous for its spaghetti
and its cavalier disregard of the
Volstead Act . . . It is said that
big time politicos of that era en-
joyed the famous Roma hospital-
ity, but to keep their consciences
clear had the place raided when
they returned to city hill . . .
One of the fascinations of the
Roma Cafe is its location . . . It is
a real challenge to the wayfaring
diner to find it after dark, even
after many years of patronage
. . . It is on the corner of Riopelle
and Erskine at the northeast cor-
ner of the Eastern Market, across
from the fire station . . . If you
still can't find it, just ask anybody
in the neighborhood.
