Treble in 1964 in Europe Year's ORT Program GENEVA (JTA) — Sales of Israel Bonds in Europe of $2,500,- 000 in 962 were doubled to $5,000,- 000 in. 1963 and are expected to be trebled to $7,500,000 this year, Moshe Galli, director of Israel Bonds in Europe, told the closing session here of a two-day meeting of the European Committee for the Development of . Israel. He attributed the gains to the fine voluntary work" of the two- year-old European Committee, comprised of Christian and Jewish leaders of France, Britain. Bel- gium, Holland, Switzerland, West Germany, Austria and Italy. t He noted that the committee and its various branches included -"not only financiers and businessmen, but also writer s, philosophers, cabinet ministers and churchmen." At a press conference. Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, executive vice president of the Israel Bond Organization, reported that total sales of Israel bonds throughout the world were $720,000,000. Israel Bond sales so far this year are more than 45 per cent ahead of those in the same period of 1963, Dr. Schwartz said. He reported also that sales in Europe so far this year were 129 per cent ahead of the correspond- ing period in 1963. He said this result is particularly encourag- ing. because 1963 was the most successful year generally in the history of Israel bond sales. with a record total of 275.000,000. He said the 1964 goal of $85,000,000 in sales would certainly be reach- ed—and possibly surpassed. He said that 531 banks in the United States had purchased a total of $11,729,000 in Israel bonds, and that 539 trade unions had pur- chased $11,765,000 worth, while pension and welfare funds had ac- quired $2,300,650 in bonds. Baron Edmond de Rothschild, president of the Israel Bond drive . in Europe, told the conference that there should' be an intensi- fied appeal to indiiridual subscrib ers, as well as to banks, insurance firms and similar institutions in Western Europe. Participating countries in the conference are France, Britain, Belgium, Holland. Denmark,. West Germany and Austria. Dr. Hans Opiecht, Swiss Social Democratic leader, reported on bond sales in Switzerland. Dr. Erich Walter Lotz described sales in West Germany, and also men- tioned the German's debt to Israel, Prof. Abraham May, a noted eco- nomist, spoke on bond sales in Holland. While Israel Bond sales were the key topic of the conference. the participants also discussed other means by which European Jewry could help Israel develop- ment. Baron Rothschild outlined a proposal under which European financiers and business leaders would establish factories in Israel turning out products specifically suited to 'the European import market. He suggested that the European investors, in addition to SHOP TALK: Tom- 90° financing such. plants, could also send experts to Israel to teach ap- propriate skills to Israeli workers. Another proposal was that sale of Israel bonds to individuals in Europe, Jewish or non-Jewish, should be accompanied by special facilities for tours for such pur- chasers in Israel. A. Maurer, a Zurich economist and a member of a distinguished Protestant fam- ily, said "a visitor to Israel be- comes a friend of Israel for life." Two hundred persons promin- ent in Geneva public life attended a reception tendered by Baron and Baroness de Rothschild. • * * Synagogue Activities Net $8,250,000 Special activities in behalf of Israel Bonds by hundreds of syna- gogues in various parts of Life United States and Canada during the High Holiday period produced sales amounting to more than $8,250.000, it was announced by Abraham Feinberg, president of the Israel Bond Organization.- This represented an increase of more than 5 per cent over the re- dasults of last year's High Holy Day effort. Feinberg said. He stressed the significance of the High Holy Day activity as the opening phase of the fall campaign of the 1964 drive to sell $85,000,000 in Israel Bonds. Announced in Poland LONDON (JTA) — The 0112 program in Poland for the new school year includes not only skills training for young Jews but also classes for older persons who can- not use their existing crafts, was reported here from Warsaw. David Slobodkin, ORT director in Poland, also said that young students are being given a general education qualifying them for high- er education. He added that the ORT schools were taking in Jew- ish children unable to find 'places in Government trade schools either because they live in areas which have no such schools or because there are more applicants than school openings. Given an opportunity in the ORT schools, he reported, these chil- dren usually do well and get quali- fication certificates which are en- dorsed by state education authori- ties. Electronics and radio skills are popular among the ORT stu- dents. It 'was also reported today from Warsaw that 152 men and women were graduated at the Warsaw ORT Center. Only three of the students failed to complete the course. Eleven trades were taught during the last term. Trainees ranged from teenagers to old age Pensioners. More trainees are ex- pected this year.
